Elephone Mobile, with its expertise in smartphone manufacture, particularly Android smartphones, have released a new flagship for the year 2018 – Elephone U – for global sale.
The Elephone U is actually the company’s first product of 2018 and in what may seem like a reminder, the Elephone S8 and Elephone S8 (Red) duo that was released in 2017 is somewhat a blueprint as to what you should expect on the Elephone U – awesomeness!
With the Elephone U, the company is starting off a new series of the phone – the U series. Initially, the device was planned to be launched as the Elephone S9. But to isolate and differentiate itself from being synonymized as a clone of the Samsung S-series, Elephone decided to rename the device Elephone U.
Below are some major specifications of the Elephone U;

Design
Being the successor to the Elephone S8, the Elephone U comes with an aluminum uni-body and is available in Black and Blue colour variants. On the front, the Elephone U is covered with 3D curved glass that blends neatly to the left and right edges of the device. Can’t picture what a 3D curved glass screen looks like? Think the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge or Galaxy S7 Edge.
Elephone boasts the device as being reasonably slim considering the big battery it carries. On the frontal’s, the Elephone U is almost full view and it boasts of an 83% screen-to-body ratio.
Like majority of phones, the device’s hard keys (volume rockers and power button) are located on the right-hand side.
In case you skipped the detail in the list of specs above, the Elephone U features the trending method of securing (read: unlocking) your smartphone – the Face ID recognition technology. The Face ID is incredibly fast; unlocks in 0.3 seconds according to Elephone. In addition to this, there is a fingerprint sensor on the rear – right below the dual camera set-up.
The placement of the fingerprint sensor on the side is to give more space for a larger display on the front without increasing the size of the overall size/dimension of the device.
On the top, the SIM and micro SD card tray is located. There is a pin ejector that ships with the phone with allows easy removal of the tray for easy SIM and micro SD card insertion and removal. On the bottom, the modern day USB Type-C port for file transfer and quick charging is present, and to its left and right flank, the speaker grills.
Display
The Elephone U has a colossal 5.99-inches screen. The screen is an AMOLED display and has a FHD+ resolution (1080 x 2160 pixels). As an added advantage – and for screen security purposes – the screen is duly protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass.
The curved edge of the display (the right-hand side) comes with a pre-installed sidebar for quick launch of some basic apps and tools like camera, flashlight, WiFi control, and brightness control. The sidebar is an impressive innovation, and it definitely goes a long way in “raising the bar” for Elephone as a phone maker.
Processor, OS, and Storage
The Elephone U ships out of the box with the Android Nougat v7.1 OS… and this is disappointing, to say the least. This is a 2018 flagship phone, the Android Oreo would have made more sense. Don’t your thing?
The Elephone U uses MediaTek’s Helio P23 chip which is crafted for improved Dual camera function and photography, as well as improved dual SIM 4G connectivity. Assisting the SoC is the ARM Mali-G71 GPU for graphical processing.
On the basis of storage, the Elephone U comes in two versions – the first version has a 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM combination while the second version comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of built-in memory. Both versions support storage expansion to the tune of 1 Terabyte via micro SD card.
Camera and Battery
The Elephone U comes with a tri-camera set-up; two on the rear and one on the front. The dual rear camera is identical quality as they both are the 13-megapixel lens. The front camera is an 8-megapixel lens in charge of selfie duties. The rear camera comes with Dual LED flash but the front camera comes with none.
Powering the device is a non-removable 3,620mAh Lithium Polymer battery that can provide a talk time of more than 12 hours and charges fast enough than regular smartphones.
Price and Availability
The Elephone U is expected to go on sale for approximately $330 (RS. 21,120) and can be purchased on electronic e-commerce stores across the globe.
