Fix 1: Close Background Processes
Let’s start with the most basic one. Check if any background processes related to MSI are running or not. If there is, then close their background process right away. This is how it could be done:
- Use the Ctrl+Alt+Del shortcut key to open the Task Manager.
- Under the Processes tab, search for the following three applications: msiexec.exe, installer.exe and setup.exe.
- Select these three processes and then click on End Task.
- Close this Task manager and try installing the app. Error 1500 should have been fixed. If not, follow the other fixes mentioned below.
Fix 2: Using Registry Editor
We could also try and remove the Installation Reference using the Registry Editor. To try it out, follow the below steps:
- First of all, open the Run dialog box using the Windows+R shortcut key. Enter regedit in Run and hit Enter.
- This will open the Registry Editor, In its address bar situated at the top, enter the following location:
- Next, select the InProgress file and open the Default file situated at the right.
- Erase all the contents of the file and click OK. Now try reinstalling the app and see if the Error 1500 has been fixed or not.
Fix 3: Restart Windows Installer
It might be some issues related to the Windows Installer. So the best bet will be to stop the currently running Windows Installer and then restart its processes. Here is how it could be done:
- Head over to the Start menu and search Services.
- Look out for Windows Installer and double-click it to open its Properties.
- Under the Startup type, change Manual to Disable or you could also click on Stop under the Status section.
- Once done, click OK and close the dialog box. Again go to Windows Installer Properties, and now change back the Startup type to Manual or hit Start under the Status section. Click OK.
Try installing the app that was earlier throwing Error 1500, it might be fixed now. If not, here’s what else you could try out.
Fix 4: Use the SFC Command
SFC or the System File Checker command checks for any corrupt or missing files and ultimately provides the fix for the same. So open the Command Prompt as an administrator, type in ‘sfc /scannow and hit Enter. Wait for the process to finish. Once it does, try reinstalling the software and see if the error has been rectified.
Fix 5: Reset the Windows Update Component
If none of the above tips were able to correct the issue, you will then have to manually reset the Windows Update Component via the CMD window. To do so, open Command Prompt as an administrator and enter the below command one at a time. Enter the first command, hit Enter, type in the next one, and so on.
- Here are the required commands to stop the Windows Update Component:
net stop wuauserv net stop cryptSvc net stop bits net stop msiserver
- Now rename the Software Distribution folder using the below two commands:
ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
- Finally restart the Windows Update Component with the help of the following commands:
net start wuauserv net start cryptSvc net start bits net start msiserver
- Now close the Command Prompt and try opening the program. See if the issue is rectified or not. If not take help of the Troubleshooter, as mentioned below
Fix 6: Using Windows Troubleshooter
You could also use the Windows Troubleshooter program related to the Windows Updates and Windows Store Apps. Here is what needs to be done for the same:
- Go to Settings from the Start menu and head over to the Update and Security section.
- Click on Troubleshooter from the left menu bar. Click on Windows Updates followed by Run the troubleshooter. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.
- Once it does, go back to Troubleshooter and click on Windows Stores App. Again click on Run the Troubleshooter and complete the process. Once done, launch the app and the Error 1500 should have been fixed by now.
