What is Happy Home Academy in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

Throughout the Animal Crossing series, a significant part of the social simulation game is for the players to creatively design their homes and put their interior designing prowess to the test. This has been consistent throughout the series ever since it was first debuted by Nintendo back in 2001. Animal Crossing: New Horizons has become the best selling game since it has sold more than 10 million copies in a single month itself.

In the previous releases of the Animal Crossing series, there was ‘Happy Room Academy’ or ‘HRA’ that would grade a player’s house depending upon the items in the house and its value. The HRA would award higher players with better rewards in par with high scores. This concept is still present even in the latest Animal Crossing: New Horizons series under a new name – ‘Happy Home Academy’ or simply just as ‘HHA.’ The new naming became popular in New Leaf and has since been taken into the New Horizons series as well. How to Get Higher Happy Home Academy Scores?

Now that we’ve covered the rewards and ranks a player can get from the Happy Home Academy, it is time to find out how a player can get them and in the best way possible. It can be noted the Feng Shui is said to be a big factor when it comes to earning bonuses from the Happy Home Academy, and it can be achieved by ensuring that players tend to their interior decorating in a particular way.

Feng Shui

Feng Shui is the art of setting particular coloured items at specific sides of a room. These coloured items must be placed at the three cardinal sides of a room; East, West, and South.

All Red coloured items need to be only on the Eastside, Green items on the Southside, and finally all Yellow items on the West side of a room.

Imagine the room being an 8×8 square, Feng Shui involved placing the above mentioned coloured items along its respective walls with two tile width, as shown in the image above.

Each item placed in their correct zone will get the player an additional 500 HHA bonus points for a maximum of 1500 HHA points for each room. If players have a four-room house, they can easily earn 6000 HHA points.

The Feng shui bonus is not restricted to the layout of the furniture as per their colour but also includes the wall hangings as well. If judging the exact colour of an item seems daunting, it is recommended to focus on its primary colour only.

The only room that does not add to the Feng Shui bonuses is basements.

Item Sets

As mentioned earlier, another way to earn HHA bonus points is by having matching furniture-theme sets. If players have a complete set within a room, it will be granting them an additional bonus from the Happy Home Academy.

There are various sets that can be found throughout the game. Here are a few of them :

  • Ironwood Furniture Set
  • Bamboo Furniture Set
  • Cherry Blossom Furniture Set
  • Zodiac Furniture Set
  • Bunny Day Furniture Set

Colour Coordination

Another way to impress the Happy Home Academy is by color coordination. Rooms having over 90% of the same coloured items can help maximize the points awarded by the HHA. The exceptions to this 90% are the wallpaper and floors.

  • Having purposeful rooms such as a kitchen or bathroom.
  • Using seasonal items for easy set bonus points.
  • Maintaining a clean and spacious home.
  • Making sure the place is tidy to avoid any cockroaches!
  • Using rewards or plaques awarded by the HHA as decorations.
