Smartphones are no longer the equipment that we use only for making phone calls or messaging. It now has a broader meaning and we use smartphones for all our productivity and entertainment purposes. Be it photography, media consumption, or work, just throw anything at your smartphone and it will do just what you want. However, in the recent past, there is a new category or niche of smartphone users that only consume their smartphones for gaming.
Thanks to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 730G (G stands for gaming) and MediaTek’s Helio G90T. In 2019, several devices sported the Snapdragon 730G like Samsung Galaxy A80, OPPO Reno 2, Realme XT, etc, while the Redmi Note 8 Pro spotted the Helio G90T. Both the gaming chipsets were found on devices that targetted the upper mid-range segment. However, MediaTek wants to take a step ahead and bring gaming chipsets for cheaper phones as well.
According to a report on Android Authority, the new chipset will be powered below the G90. MediaTek’s Yenchi Lee stated that:
“Definitely, it’s lower than G90T, it’s more for mass market”.
Moreover, there have been leaks about the Helio G70 processor that is rumored to spot 8 cores in a 2+6 configuration. Besides, it will also have 2xCortex-A75 cores clocked at 2.0GHz and 6xCortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.7GHz or 1.8GHz. Also, the company is also working on other technologies such as tri-cluster CPU and providing GPU updates via the Play Store. Notably, Qualcomm announced during the launch of Snapdragon 865 and 765 that it will bring GPU updates for the devices via the Play Store. And MediaTek is also planning to come up with something similar.
But, it is unclear whether MediTek will bring the gaming chipsets on cheaper phones starting this year or not. We will have to wait and see further developments in this regard. Let us know in the comments below what are thoughts about MediTek bringing cheaper smartphones with gaming chipsets. Until the next post…Cheers!
