How to Deal with Barbarians in Civilization VI

These barbarians can be extremely annoying during the initial stages. Unless they are dealt with properly, game progression in Civilization can be severely impacted. It is important for players to frequently scan their location for barbarian camps as they are known to creep out of nowhere to launch their assault. In Civilization VI, speed makes all the necessary difference in protecting the player’s city and improvements.

Today we will detail a proper strategy on how can you deal with Barbarians. In order to decrease the overall map congestion, the number of unit improvements is limited, such that they have to be of the same type. For instance, to get protection from barbarians during the initial stages in Civilization VI, a builder unit can have a warrior unit.

How to Deal with Barbarians in Civilization VI

In order to defeat these barbarians, it is important for players to understand their mechanics. First of all, Barbarians can be easily identified by their distinguishable red and black coloring. They do not have any form of association or allegiance to any particular state or city.

There is no such thing as a designated camping area for barbarians. In Civilization VI, they can randomly spawn anywhere, in places like the Tundra and Snow terrains or anywhere within the limits of the Fog of War zones. Technically, this means that barbarians are free to set up camp anywhere that is not within the foreseeable vision of a unit. Players will notice Barbarian outposts towards the far Northern and Southern region as they progress in the game.

Barbarians are only powerful in masses, so catching a few them off guard will not pose any serious threats. But, they are infamous for spawning and attacking in large numbers.

The Barbarians’ methodology involves using a scout. They deploy a scout to explore and locate the player’s city. Once the scout has successfully found the player’s city, it will proceed to return back to the base camps and trigger the rest of the barbarian camp. After the camp has awoken, things get troubling as the barbarian camp will initiate large spawns frequently. These spawns can be in groups of three or six based on the game difficulty that players use. They will then proceed to try and destroy the player’s city. The barbarian attack can take form in many ways, and they can plunder the town, destroy all the improvements made, attempt to kidnap and kill locals, or even try to destroy players’ tree routes. Either way, it can be very annoying when it does happen. And it will!

To combat these attacks, players need to devise a proper strategy. This strategy can take place at any of the three possible levels. Each of these levels poses a certain amount of risk for the player, but with risk comes with matching rewards as well. Let’s scroll down to find out what these three strategies are.

Strategy 1

The first strategy, also one of the most common one employed by most players, is simply the use of brute force. This involves taking up a primitive modus operandi against the barbarians by deploying a scout from the player. The scout or scouts will be responsible for locating and observing all the barbarian camps that pose a threat to the city. Once identified, the player can deploy their attacking unit to these camps and kill them all there. By destroying the barbarian camps before they can attack eliminates the risk before it can pose further threats.

Although it may sound primitive, Barbarian camps are not easy to infiltrate, and players must be careful when attempting to do so. There is a very effective spearman who stands guard at the camp base. If players effectively use their resources, the spear guard can be handled.

In Civilization VI, there are three types of camps or posts for barbarians:

  • Melee
  • Cavalry
  • Naval

The Melee camp is the most common one for players and can be found spawning on regular in-land tiles. The Cavalry camp will only spawn around horses. They are not to be trifled with as they can use mounted-assaults like horse archers. The last type, are the Naval camps that will roam the coastline and destroy anything they can get their hands on. Having a navy will make things much easier as it can destroy the barbarian naval camps.

The first strategy offers players a median risk-reward scenario. Players will earn additional XP and other rewards as much as the risk involved in it, which is fairly little compared to the other ones in this guide.

Strategy 2

The second strategy available for players is to eliminate the source itself. Which means, taking down the barbarian scout either once it leaves the camp or right before it returns. This involves deploying a warrior at the barbarian camp. The warrior must ensure that the scout does not make it back to trigger the barbarian camp.

This is a more efficient method since it limits the resources required and also achieve the same goal. Unfortunately, with lesser risk, it does not reward the player with anything significant.

Strategy 3

This is the last possible strategy, the one that offers the most rewards for players and poses the greatest risk, involves deception. Players can earn the highest amount of rewards here if they can successfully pull it off.

The funny thing about these barbarians is that even with all their numbers put together, they are not capable of destroying a capital city. This means that players can allow the barbarians to make their way into the player’s capital city and wreck as much havoc as possible. This will, in turn, provide an opportunity for players to earn unit experience along with finding additional inspiration boosts. For instance, Archery will receive a boost if they manage to use a slinger to kill a barbarian or Bronze working will receive a similar increase for successfully taking out three barbarians.

As mentioned earlier, this strategy poses a lot of risks, and there are so many ways this can go wrong. Amateur Civilization VI players are better off using any of the first two strategies.
