Fix: File Record Segment is Unreadable on Windows 10

Recently, many Windows 10 users have complained about the “File Record Segment is Unreadable” error, which prevents them from accessing their system. How to fix the “File Record Segment is Unreadable” error?

Fix 1: Clone your Hard Drive:

If the “File Record Segment is Unreadable” error is found in your system, which indicates that your hard drive is damaged or crashed. So, the first procedure you need to do is save your files, here we recommend cloning your existing Hard Drive. In order to do that you need to have a new Hard Drive and dependable Hard Drive cloning software. There is numerous cloning software available online, consider using a trusted one amongst them.

After the cloning process is completed, you can use the new Hard Drive and check the files you saved to the new Drive are still available. Some of your files might permanently lose due to damage to your Hard Drive. 

Fix 2: Run CHKDSK scan from Safe Mode:

As per several suffered users, running the “chkdsk scan” through Safe Mode helped them to get rid of the “File Record Segment is Unreadable” error within no time. So, we recommend you, try the same and check whether it works or not. For doing so, follow the steps given below;

  • Firstly, press on the Start menu and click the Power button.
  • Then from the drop-up menu select the Restart option.
  • Your system will Restart now. Once your system boots select the option Troubleshoot->Advanced options->Startup Settings and then click on the Restart button.
  • When again your system Restarts, a list of options appears on the screen. There you need to select any version of Safe Mode by clicking the exact button.

In case you can’t boot to Windows, you can enter into Safe Mode by Restarting your system a few times while the boot process. When you entered the Safe Mode, you need to launch Command Prompt window to run the chkdsk scan. To do so, follow the given steps;

  • Press Windows key +X altogether and from the menu, select the Command Prompt (Admin) option.
  • Then inside the Command Prompt window type chkdsk C: /R and then press Enter.

If you are currently using the C drive and in case asked you need to Restart your system to perform the scan, press “Y” or “Yes” to restart the system. Then let the scanning process gets complete on its own.

Once the process gets completed, check the said issue got solved or not.

Fix 3: Connect the Hard Drive to a different PC:

The “File Record Segment is Unreadable” error can also occur if your Hard Drive is Physically damaged (the surface is scratched). This doesn’t mean that your files are lost. You can easily save those files by connecting your Hard Drive to a different system. If you are not familiar with this procedure then you can rely on any expert technician. 

Once the Hard Drive is connected to a functioning system, you can access it and copy all your files. After copying the files safely, you can reformat the damaged drive and check whether you are able to install Windows 10 on it. If not, all you have to do is replace the Hard Drive.
