Fix: Lords of the Fallen Fatal Error, Out Of Memory and ACCESS VIOLATION Error

The 2023 Lords of the Fallen version has been entirely reconstructed using Unreal Engine 5. Compared to its original version released in 2014, the latest edition brings many changes and improvements; however, the reviews haven’t changed. On Steam, both Lords of the Fallen editions have received mixed reviews from players. While there are many reasons for this, one of the primary reasons is technical issues and bugs.

Lords of the Fallen Fatal Error, Out Of Memory and ACCESS VIOLATION Error

Lords of the Fallen is troubling many players as they keep showing many errors. As per the complaints on the Steam community and other popular forums like Reddit, the game shows fatal errorout-of-memory errors, and access violation errors, to name a few.

Anything that stops your gameplay is frustrating, and so are the errors. But there’s no need to panic, as I have jotted down several effective solutions to fix these issues for a smooth and uninterrupted gaming experience. Before heading to the solutions, let’s quickly walk through the potential reasons that could trigger this error. You’ll better understand the problem, resulting in effective troubleshooting.

What Causes These Errors in Lords of the Fallen?

  • Insufficient system resources: If your computer is poorly optimized or runs highly resource-consuming tasks, there may not be sufficient resources, such as RAM and CPU, available for other games, including Lords of the Fallen. If so, it can show errors like out of memory and even crash or freeze.
  • Corrupted graphics driver: A PC running an older or corrupted graphics driver is likely to show errors. Hence, you must regularly update the graphics driver for a better gaming experience.
  • Corrupted DirectX shader cache: The DirectX cache can get corrupted and cause an out-of-memory error. You must delete it so that your PC creates a fresh DirectX cache.
  • Corrupted/missing game files: Computers with corrupted or missing game files will most likely show errors. There’s a quick way to repair your game files (more on that in the solution #8).

These are common reasons you may get fatal, out-of-memory, and access violation errors in Lords of the Fallen.

How to Fix Lords of the Fallen Fatal Error, Out of Memory, and Access Violation Error?

In this section, I’ve jotted down effective troubleshooting methods to fix errors in Lords of the Fallen. Before applying any fix, ensure that your computer meets the minimum requirements (at least) for the game.

Minimum requirements:

  • OS: Windows 10 64bit
  • Processor: intel i5 8400 | AMD Ryzen 5 2600
  • Memory: 12 GB RAM
  • Graphics: 6GBs VRAM | NVIDIA GTX-1060 | AMD Radeon RX 590
  • DirectX: Version 12
  • Storage: 45 GB available space

Recommended requirements:

  • OS: Windows 10 64bit
  • Processor: intel i7 8700 | AMD Ryzen 5 3600
  • Memory: 16 GB RAM
  • Graphics: 8GBs VRAM | NVIDIA RTX-2080 | AMD Radeon RX 6700
  • DirectX: Version 12
  • Network: Broadband Internet connection
  • Storage: 45 GB available space

To run the game, your computer should have the minimum requirements (at least). However, for better performance and experience, upgrade to recommended specifications.

1. Disable Unnecessary Startup Apps

Optimizing your PC is essential to get the most out of it. One of the important things to look at is the startup apps. These apps automatically start when you boot your PC. In short, a higher number of startup apps results make your computer slow by consuming CPU and memory.

So, you have to select the startup apps carefully.

  1. Press the Windows + X buttons together and select Task Manager.
  2. Tap on Startup apps from the left pane.
  3. To disable a startup app, right-click on it and select Disable.
  4. Repeat step 3 to disable all unnecessary startup apps.

Once done, restart your computer. This time, only essential apps will load, thus saving more resources for other apps and games. Launch Lords of the Fallen to check if the error is fixed.

2. Update Your Graphics Drivers

If you don’t like updating graphics drivers regularly, like most people, it can cause various issues on your PC. An outdated driver may not be compatible with the latest games or software, causing incompatibility issues. Also, the driver should not be corrupted as it won’t function properly, leading to game crashes and errors.

If you’re experiencing a fatal error, out-of-memory error, or access violation error in Lords of the Fallen, updating your graphics driver’s a good idea.

How to update the graphics driver on Windows:

  1. Press Windows + X and select Device Manager from the available options.
  2. Expand the Display Adapters section by double-tapping on it. You can also do it by clicking the arrow on the left.
  3. Right-click on your graphics driver and choose the Update driver option.
  4. Tap on Search automatically for drivers.
  5. Follow on-screen instructions to update the driver.

It is an easy way of updating drivers on Windows computers. A more effective approach to updating drivers is using the manufacturers’ software. If you have an NVIDIA GPU, get the GeForce Experience. For AMD GPUs, we have AMD Adrenalin.

Download and install the app and run a driver check for pending updates. Restart your PC after updating the drivers, and then launch the game to check if the problem has been resolved.

3. Disable Antivirus and Firewall

If Lords of the Fallen keeps showing you the access violation error, disable your antivirus and firewall. While they help protect your system, occasionally, they block the game’s files, causing too many issues.

To ensure that antivirus and firewall are not blocking the game’s files or the connection to servers, you should disable them temporarily.

How to disable Windows Firewall:

  1. In the Windows search box, type Windows Defender Firewall.
  2. Choose Windows Defender Firewall from the search results. [Do not select Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security.]
  3. Tap on Turn Windows Defender Firewall on or off.
  4. Under Private network settings, select the Turn off Windows Defender Firewall option. Select the same option under Public network settings.
  5. Click OK at the bottom to save changes.

After disabling the Firewall, launch Lords of the Fallen to check if the problem has been fixed. If yes, you should allow the game through the firewall (more on that below), as I don’t recommend keeping the firewall disabled all the time for your device security.

Here’s how to allow Lords of the Fallen through the Windows Defender Firewall:

  1. Open the Windows Defender Firewall again.
  2. Tap on Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall.
  3. Click Change settings.
  4. Scroll through the list to find Lords of the Fallen and check the Public and Private boxes beside it (if they are not already).
  5. Click OK.

If allowing the game through the firewall does not fix the error, turn off all antivirus on your PC. If you can’t temporarily turn off antivirus, add Lords of the Fallen to the whitelist.

Don’t forget to re-enable your antivirus and firewall protection after trying this fix.

4. Delete DirectX Shader Cache

DirectX shader cache improves the game’s performance by reducing the GPU time for compiling shaders. However, they can get corrupted and cause many problems, including crashing, freezing, and the errors you’re getting.

Try deleting the DirectX shader cache and see if it can resolve Lords of the Fallen errors.

  1. Close the game if opened already.
  2. In the Windows search box at the bottom, type “disk cleanup” and hit Enter.
  3. Check the DirectX Shader Cache box and click OK.
  4. Tap on Delete Files to remove the DirectX Shader Cache.

After cleaning up the DirectX Shader Cache from your PC, launch Lords of the Fallen.

5. Increase Virtual Memory on Your PC

Most video games, including Lords of the Fallen, use virtual memory if RAM is insufficient. According to some reports, the out-of-memory error has been an issue with games built using Unreal Engine 5, and the primary reason for the error is the virtual memory.

The default Windows settings do not allocate enough virtual memory to games, which could be causing the out-of-memory error. Try manually increasing the virtual memory on your PC to check if it helps.

  1. Press the Windows + I keys together to open the Windows Settings app.
  2. Please scroll down to About and tap on it.
  3. Click Advanced system settings.
  4. Under Performance, tap on Settings.
  5. Go to the Advanced tab.
  6. Click Change under Virtual memory.
  7. Uncheck the box for Automatically manage paging file size for all drives.
  8. Tap on Custom Size and set the Initial size and Maximum size in MBs (more on that below).
  9. Click OK and restart your PC.

You should be careful when entering the Initial and Maximum size values in step 8. The virtual memory should be 1.5 to 3 times the multiple of physical RAM on your computer. You can set the Initial size to 1.5x of your RAM and Maximum size to 3x your RAM.

Let’s say your computer has 8GB of physical RAM. In this case, you should set the Initial size to 12,288 MB and the Maximum size to 24,576 MB. Do the math accordingly. After manually setting these values, restart your computer for the changes.

If increasing the virtual memory does not fix the errors, you should revert the changes. For this, tick the box for Automatically manage paging and file size for all drives in step 7 and click OK.

6. Enable Debug Mode

Computers with high-end graphics can also encounter errors in games. GPU from third-party AIB partners typically have higher GPU and clock speed. Although a boost in clock speed can result in noticeable performance improvement, occasionally, it can backfire and throw errors.

If your CPU is overclocked or comes from a third-party AIB partner, try enabling the debug mode to force the GPU to use Nvidia’s recommended clock speed.

Here’s how to enable the debug mode:

  1. Open the Nvidia Control Panel.
  2. Tap on Help in the top menu and click Debug Mode.

7. Increase Shader Cache Size

Lords of the Fallen is developed using Unreal Engine 5, which heavily uses shaders to render video games. So, if the default shader cache size is not enough for Lords of the Fallen, it can throw errors like out-of-memory or fatal errors. Try increasing the shader cache size to check if it can resolve the errors.

  1. Open the Nvidia Control Panel on your computer.
  2. Tap the “+” icon before 3D Settings to expand its options.
  3. Click on Manage 3D settings.
  4. Tap on Global Settings.
  5. Find Shader Cache Size in the list and tap on it.
  6. Select 10GB from the dropdown and apply the changes.

8. Verify & Repair Game Files

Your computer may have corrupted or missing game files, causing these errors. To ensure no bad files, verify the integrity of Lords of the Fallen on Steam. Doing this will automatically check and repair corrupted files (if there are any).

  1. Launch the Steam app on your PC.
  2. Go to the LIBRARY tab.
  3. Right-click on Lords of the Fallen and select the Properties option.
  4. Go to the Installed Files tab from the left pane.
  5. Tap on Verify integrity of game files.

It may take a while to check and repair the game files. So, be patient until the process is completed. Launch the game afterwards to check if the error has been fixed.

9. Change the DirectX Launch Option

If Lords of the Fallen crashes with a fatal error, DirectX could have an issue. You can try using a previous DirectX version to launch the game.

  1. Launch the Steam client on your computer.
  2. Navigate to the Library section in Steam and locate the Lords of the Fallen in your Steam library.
  3. Right-click on the game and choose the Properties option.
  4. Tap on SET LAUNCH OPTIONS and type -dx11 in the bar.
  5. Click the OK button to confirm your changes.

Launch the game to check if DirectX 11 can resolve the problem. If the problem persists, revert the changes and try other fixes.

10. Change These BIOS and XTU Settings

Many players got the out of memory error fixed by tweaking the CPU Offset and Performance Core Offset settings. The reason is unclear, but it has worked for them.

Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Boot your computer to BIOS.
  2. In BIOS, go to the CPU settings.
  3. Find the CPU Offset setting and change it to “-5”.
  4. Save your changes and exit BIOS.
  5. Now, open Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (XTU).
  6. Go to the Core Voltage tab.
  7. Set the Performance Core Offset to “50”.
  8. Click Apply to save your changes.

11. Reinstall the Game

If everything else fails, you can try reinstalling the game. To uninstall the game, go to Steam -> Library, right-click on the game, select Manage and click Uninstall. Tap Uninstall again to confirm.

You can also uninstall the game via the Control Center as follows:

  1. Type Control Panel in the Windows search box at the bottom and hit Enter.
  2. Tap the dropdown next to View by and select Large icons or Small icons.
  3. Select Programs and Features.
  4. Right-click on Lords of the Fallen and choose Uninstall.

After removing the game, reinstall your PC before installing it again.

By following this guide, you should be able to fix Lords of the Fallen fatal error, out of memory, and access violation error on your computer. However, if nothing works, reach out to official support.
