Is the OnePlus 12 or 12R smartphone waterproof?

The OnePlus 12 and 12R globally launched in early 2024 are expected to dominate the Android market for a plethora of reasons. Considering the features, OnePlus 12 and 12R outbeats all their predecessors until now. The flagship comes with a whopping 6.82 inches LTPO AMOLED display along with top-notch features. In addition, both devices feature a triple rear camera set making them all cooked up to meet user’s expectations. But nowadays the durability of a smartphone is another factor of concern. Speaking of which, a smartphone with a waterproof IP rating has more demand. So, is the OnePlus 12 or 12R smartphone waterproof?

The ingress protection rating is a metric to distinguish the durability of a device against water and other particles. Fortunately, the waterproof rating in smartphones is no more a rare sight. We can even find IP68 ratings on budget Android smartphones today. Hence, coming from the flagship family, users are extremely curious to know if the OnePlus 12 or 12 Pro comes with a waterproof IP rating. So, without any further ado, let’s find it out.

Is the OnePlus 12 or 12R smartphone waterproof

Is the OnePlus 12 or 12R smartphone waterproof?

The previous launches from OnePlus i.e., the OnePlus 11 came with an IP64 rating whereas the 11R model had no official IP rating. Now, this seems to be a huge missing in such high and mid-range devices. But the OnePlus 12 and 12R belonging to the flagship and near-flagship family come with an even greater price tag.

The OnePlus 12 comes at Rs 65,000 – Rs. 70,000 whereas the 12R costs between Rs. 40,000 – Rs 45,000 varying on their storage and RAM. From this perspective, having a waterproof IP rating would completely justify the prodigious price range of these devices. Hence, this has aroused hope for the users as they wish to know more about the waterproof technology used in these devices.

After checking out the official sources, we found out that the OnePlus 12 has an IP65 water and dust resistance rating. Although it must be disappointing not to see an IP68 rating, sources still claim that the device is durable enough in harsh conditions. On the other hand, The OnePlus 12R features a relatively lower IP64 rating. This means that both devices are resistant to water splashes and dust but not completely waterproof. However, we will take a step further and conduct a water and dustproof test on both devices to provide a better insight into their durability. But before that, let us take a quick look at the highlighted features of the OnePlus 12 and 12R.

OnePlus 12 and 12R Highlighted Features

The OnePlus 12 and 12R are the latest launches from OnePlus. The 12R is a mid-range device that offers slightly lesser specs compared to the OnePlus 12. Both devices run on Android 14, OxygenOS 14 and are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen chipset.

Additionally, both smartphones feature a triple rear camera setup. The OnePlus 12 offers a 50MP main camera along with a 48MP ultrawide and 64MP periscopic telephoto lens, and a 32MP selfie camera. On the contrary, the OnePlus 12R also comes with a 50MP main camera along with an 8MP ultrawide and 2MP macro lens, and a 16MP selfie camera.

Apart from that, the OnePlus 12 boasts a robust 5400 mAh battery, and the 12R carries a 5500 mAh battery. The flagship model is available in 4 different storage variants, 256GB + 12GB RAM, 512GB + 16GB RAM, 1TB + 16GB RAM, and 1TB + 24GB RAM. On the other hand, the OnePlus 12R is available in 2 storage variants, 128GB + 8GB RAM, and 256GB + 16GB RAM.

OnePlus 12 and 12R Waterproof Test

We will perform this waterproof test mainly in three steps. Firstly, we will perform a splashproof test on both devices followed by a water immersion and dustproof test. After conducting these tests and observing the results, you will have a practical idea about the durability of these devices and whether they are waterproof or not.

In the splashproof test, we sprinkled droplets of water on both OnePlus 12 and 12R and left it for a few minutes. Fortunately, none of the smartphones suffered any damage and no water could enter into the devices.

In the next test, we immersed both the devices underwater in two different glass boxes and left them for 60 seconds. Surprisingly, both devices looked in good shape as no water went inside the devices. The OnePlus 12 and 12R passed the water immersion test quite comfortably and the smartphones were fully functional.

Lastly, in the dustproof test, we placed the devices under an artificial sandstorm environment for another couple of minutes. And once again, both devices performed successfully without being prone to dust. Even in this harsh environment, the device didn’t suffer any scratches nor did it allow the dust to enter inside.

Hence, after observing the results from the previous tests, we can conclude that both the OnePlus 12 and 12R passed the water and dustproof test under our observation.

Conclusion

From the above observation, we can clearly say that even with IP65 and IP64 ratings, the OnePlus 12 and 12R can survive in harsh conditions. Moreover, the devices possess great capability to withstand underwater. However, these results may vary according to the changes in the environment.

Since the devices carry water and dust-resistant ratings, and not waterproof ratings, they may fail in extreme situations. Therefore, we recommend you avoid exposing the devices to heavy rainfall, and storms, or using them underwater intentionally to prevent damage.
