Fix: Metro Exodus Full Screen Not Working

Well, a couple of reasons can be found that may trouble you a lot, such as outdated graphics drivers, an outdated Windows version or build, issues with the antivirus or firewall program, corrupted or missing game files, and more. Issues with the admin access, issues with the system files, conflicts with the launcher profile details, etc. might also cause several problems. So, let’s jump into it.

1. Run the game as an Administrator

First, you should try running the game exe application file on your PC as an administrator to ensure there is no conflict with the system user account control (UAC) access. If in case, your game file isn’t running with the admin access, it may cause launching issues on the Windows PC. To give admin access:

Right-click on the Metro Exodus exe application file on your PC.

Click on Properties > Click on the Compatibility tab.

Make sure to tick mark the Run this program as an administrator checkbox to enable it.

Click on Apply and then OK to save changes.

Once done, you can launch Metro Exodus again to check for the issue.

2. Update Metro Exodus

You can also try checking for the RDR2 update at your end because an outdated game version can eventually trigger multiple issues with the game launching or not running in the full-screen window mode. The latest game version also brings bug fixes, improvements, additional features, and more. You can follow the steps below to update the game.

For Steam:

Launch Steam on the PC > Click on LIBRARY.
Right-click on Metro Exodus from the left pane.
Select Properties > Click on UPDATES from the left pane.
Click on Always keep this game updated under the AUTOMATIC UPDATES section.
Next, go back to LIBRARY > Click on Metro Exodus.
If the Update button is visible, make sure to click on it to install the latest update.
Wait for the process to be completed > restart the PC.

For Epic Games Launcher:

Open Epic Games Launcher > Go to Library.
Click on the three dots icon next to Metro Exodus.

Click on Auto Update to turn on the toggle.
If an update is available, the launcher will automatically install the update for you.
Finally, restart the Epic Games Launcher to apply the changes.

3. Update Graphics Drivers

You should also try updating the graphics driver on your PC to make sure there is no outdated or missing GPU driver conflicting with the game. It’s worth mentioning to check for the update and install the same whenever available. To do that:

Press the Windows + X keys to open the Quick Start Menu.
Click on Device Manager > Double-click on Display adapters.
Right-click on the dedicated graphics card that’s currently active.

Choose Update driver > Click on Search automatically for drivers.
If an update is available, the system will automatically download & install the latest version.
Once done, the system will reboot automatically. You can also manually restart the PC.

If in case, you can’t find any update, then make sure to visit the official graphics card website and search manually for the latest update. If a new version is available, download the file on your PC and install it. You’ll need to check the links below depending on your graphics card model.

4. Update Windows Version or Build

In some cases, an outdated Windows system might cause multiple issues with the game files running properly. You should check for Windows updates on your computer. To do so:

Press the Windows + I keys to open Windows Settings.
Click on Update & Security > Under the Windows Update section, click on Check for updates.

If there is an update available, you can click on Download and Install.
Wait for the process to complete the installation.
Once done, reboot your computer to apply changes.

5. Verify and Repair Game Files

It’s also worth mentioning to verify and repair the installed game files on the PC so that the missing or corrupted game files can be fixed easily via the respective game launcher. To do so:

For Steam:

Open Steam > Go to LIBRARY.
Right-click on Metro Exodus from the left pane.
Select Properties > Go to LOCAL FILES.

Click on Verify integrity of game files > Wait for the process to be completed.
Once done, make sure to reboot the PC to apply changes.

For Epic Games Launcher:

If you’re using the Epic Games Launcher then you can follow the steps below to fix the Metro Exodus full-screen not working issue.

Open Epic Games Launcher > Go to Library.

Click on the three-dots icon next to Metro Exodus.
Select Verify and wait for the process to be completed.
Once done, make sure to reboot the PC to apply changes.

6. Disable Antivirus Protection

If in case, your PC applications or the games not running properly on your PC then the chances are high that there is a conflict with the security software. An aggressive antivirus program can prevent ongoing files to reduce vulnerability issues on the system. But you can manually disable the antivirus protection to check for the issue. To do that:

Press the Windows + I keys to open Windows Settings.
Click on Update & Security > Click on Windows Security from the left pane.
Go to Virus & threat protection > Click on Manage settings.
Next, you’ll need to simply turn off the Real-time protection toggle.
If prompted, click on Yes to proceed further.
Once done, launch RDR2 to check for the issue.

7. Delete the Game Settings file

Sometimes, deleting the game settings (XML) file from the installed game folder might fix the full-screen not working issue. To do so:

Go to This PC (File Explorer) > Go to Documents.
Open the Games folder > Go to the Metro Exodus folder.
Open the Settings file and delete the system.xml file.
Once done, run the game and check for the issue again.

8. Run SFC Scan

The System File Checker (SFC) scan is a utility tool for the Windows system that allows users to scan for corrupted or missing Windows files and restore them automatically. To do this:

Click on the Start Menu and type cmd.
Right-click on Command Prompt from the search result.
Select Run as administrator > If UAC prompts, click Yes to proceed.
Now, type the following command line, and hit Enter to execute it:

SFC /scannow

Wait for the scanning process to complete.
Once done, reboot the PC to apply changes.
