Getting a Windows Update error when opening FACEIT Anti-Cheat can prevent you from joining a match. Before reinstalling anything, check the exact message: if it says your system is missing important Windows security updates, those updates need to be installed.
A clean reinstall of the FACEIT client is another troubleshooting step you can try if the client itself is behaving incorrectly. This guide explains how to uninstall FACEIT, remove its leftover local files, and reinstall it.
Important: Reinstalling the FACEIT client does not install Windows updates or necessarily reinstall the separate FACEIT Anti-Cheat application.
First, Check for Missing Windows Security Updates
If the message specifically says “Your system is missing important Windows security updates,” FACEIT’s official guidance is to open Windows Update and check for security updates.
Open the Start menu and search for Check for updates.
Open the matching Windows Settings page.
Click Check for updates.
Download and install the available security updates.
Restart your computer when prompted.
Open FACEIT Anti-Cheat again and check whether the error remains.
If Windows Update fails, note its error code. Troubleshooting that update failure is necessary; repeatedly reinstalling FACEIT will not resolve missing operating-system patches.
If you also need to refresh the FACEIT client installation, follow the steps below. Make sure you have your sign-in details available, as removing local files may reset settings and require you to log in again.
Step 1: Close FACEIT Completely
Start by closing the FACEIT application.
Check the system tray near the Windows clock. You may need to click the arrow to display hidden icons. If FACEIT is still running there, right-click its icon and choose the option to exit.
Closing the main window may leave the application running in the background, which can prevent you from removing its local files.
Step 2: Uninstall FACEIT
Open the Start menu.
Search for FACEIT.
Right-click the application and select Uninstall.
Windows will open Installed Apps, Apps & features, or Programs and Features, depending on your system.
Find the FACEIT client in the application list.
Select Uninstall and follow the prompts.
Wait for the uninstall process to finish before continuing.
If FACEIT Anti-Cheat appears as a separate entry, remember that this walkthrough is for reinstalling the client. The two applications should not be treated as interchangeable.
Step 3: Open the Local AppData Folder
Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
Enter the following exactly, including both percent signs:
%localappdata%
Click OK or press Enter.
This opens the local application-data directory for your Windows account.
Step 4: Delete the Leftover FACEIT Folder
Inside the directory, look for a folder named FACEIT.
Select the FACEIT folder.
Right-click it and choose Delete.
Confirm the action if Windows asks.
Delete only the FACEIT folder. Other folders in this location contain data used by unrelated applications.
Removing the folder clears the client’s leftover local data and may reset its preferences or sign-in state. If no FACEIT folder exists, skip this step.
Step 5: Resolve Any “Folder in Use” Message
If Windows says the folder is still in use, check that FACEIT has fully exited.
You can also open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc and check for a remaining FACEIT client process. Close only the process you can clearly identify as belonging to the client, then try deleting the folder again.
If the folder remains locked, restart your computer and try again before reopening FACEIT.
Open the newly installed FACEIT client and sign in.
Next, launch FACEIT Anti-Cheat and check whether the original error still appears. If it does, record the complete message rather than assuming the reinstall failed for the same reason.
A client installation problem and a Windows security-update requirement need different troubleshooting steps.
What If the Error Still Appears?
If the message continues to mention missing Windows security updates, return to Windows Update and check whether an update failed or a restart is pending.
If you cannot resolve the problem, contact FACEIT Support and include:
A screenshot of the complete error.
Your Windows version and build.
Any error code shown by Windows Update.
Whether the error appears in the FACEIT client or Anti-Cheat application.
The troubleshooting steps you have already tried.
