Fix: macOS 14 Sonoma No Internet Connection Issue

Apple’s latest version for MacOS is the Sonoma, which was just recently unveiled in June. Early tech enthusiasts were quick to install this latest version on their system, but considering it is an early build, many people are struggling with several connectivity issues. One particular issue that several users have reported is internet connectivity. Irrespective of whether users use an ethernet or WiFi connection to connect their Sonoma device to the internet, they struggle to use internet services on their systems.

A device where internet connectivity is not working is as good as a dead unit now. We rely on an active internet for all of our needs now, and if the internet is not working on your Sonoma device, many might downgrade their device to the previous version. However, before you choose the downgrading option, there are some solutions that you can try from your end to resolve this issue. If it still does not work, you can opt for the downgrade. However, it would be wise to try the solutions first. So without any further ado, let’s get into it.

Fix: macOS 14 Sonoma No Internet Connection Issue

How to fix macOS 14 Sonoma No Internet Connection Issue?

No internet connectivity issue on any device is primarily for three aspects. The problem would mainly lie in the router, the network provider, or Mac. So let’s look at each solution and check whether this can be resolved independently.

Restart the System:

As simple as it may sound, sometimes a complete system restart can also iron out most bugs. So if you have not yet tried restarting the system, do it immediately. Perform a complete system restart and then try using the internet again. If it still does not work, try the next solution.

Turn WiFi On/Off:

Restarting the WiFi is the most common fix you should try when encountering internet problems. Let’s see how you can do that on your macOS.

  • Click on the WiFi icon on the menu bar present at the top right side of the screen.
  • Turn off the toggle next to the WiFi to turn it off.
  • Wait for a few minutes.
  • Click on the icon again, and turn on the WiFi toggle.

If this does not work, move on to the next solution.

Remove all connected accessories:

If you have multiple accessories like Mouse, Keyboard, External Drive, and more connected to your Mac, you must disconnect them immediately. These peripherals can sometimes affect the functionality of your Mac, and even with the internet connectivity issue, it could be an accessory at fault.

So remove all of them and try reconnecting to the internet. If it is still not resolved, try the next solution.

Move Close to Router

It is not unusual for your connection to be inconsistent if you use a Wireless WiFi connection and the router is far from the PC. Budget  WiFi routers often have a weak range in terms of connectivity, and if you suspect that could be the case for you, you should move the router closer to your PC. If your internet connection does not improve even after changing the position of your router, move on to the next solution.

Use an Ethernet Adapter

If you are trying to connect to the internet only via a Wireless WiFi, you should also consider using a wired connection. Most Macs do not have an ethernet port now, but that can be quickly resolved with a Type C hub. So, use an ethernet type C hub with your Mac and form a wired connection.

If your MacOS Sonoma still does not get internet connectivity, move on to the next solution.

Update Date & Time On Your Apple MAC:

Yes, if the date and time on your Mac are not the actual current time, your computer will have trouble accessing the internet. So you need to set it correctly. Let’s see how one can do that.

  • Click on the Apple icon in the menu bar and choose System Preferences from the list of available options.
  • Go to Date & Time.
  • Select Time Zone.
  • Set the time zone to automatic using the current location.

Besides this, you also need to enable Location Services to improve location accuracy. Let’s see how to do that.

  • Now go back to System Preferences.
  • Click on Security & Privacy.
  • Go to Privacy.
  • Select Location Services from the sidebar.
  • Select Enable Location services.

If you still cannot connect to the internet on your MacOS Sonoma device, move on to the next solution.

Forget the WiFi network and reconnect:

Another simple fix we try with all our devices when fixing an internet issue is reconnecting to the WiFi network. When you connect to a WiFi network, it is added to the list of available networks. And sometimes, you need to forget these connections and reconnect to the network to fix typical network inconsistencies. Let’s see how we can do that on a Sonoma macOS.

  • Click on the Apple icon in the menu bar and choose System Preferences from the list of available options.
  • Click on Network.
  • Now, click on the WiFi option on the window’s left pane.
  • On the right pane, you will see the Advanced button. Click on it.
  • Select the WiFi network you are having trouble with under Preferred Networks and click on the – icon.
  • A confirmation pop-up will show up. Here, click on Ok.
  • Finally, click on Apply to save the changes.

Now you need to reconnect to the WiFi network.

  • Click on the WiFi icon on the menu bar.
  • Choose the network you want to connect to from the list of networks that dropdown.
  • Click on that network, enter the password, and click on Join.

If this does not work, move on to the next solution.

Reboot the Router/ Modem:

Sometimes the problem could be with the network equipment as well. The WiFi or modem you are trying to connect to from your Mac might be having trouble connecting to the network. So a router reboot can fix this problem.

  • Go to your router and modem.
  • Unplug all the wires and connections from the devices.
  • Wait for a few minutes.
  • Plug in the wires again and let your modem connect to the ISP again.
  • Once the connection is established, check whether your problem with Monterey is resolved.

Try the next solution if you still have internet connectivity issues.

Select 5GHz Band:

If you use the 2.5 GHz Band for WiFi, we recommend changing it to 5 GHz. This will allow a greater bandwidth which will only result in better connectivity.

  • Click on the Apple icon in the menu bar and choose System Preferences from the list of available options.
  • Click on Network.
  • Now, click on the WiFi option on the window’s left pane.
  • On the right pane, you will see the Advanced button. Click on it.
  • Drag the 5 GHz network to the top and click on Apply.

Now try reusing the WiFi. Try the next solution if you still cannot connect to the internet.

Disable Firewall:

Sometimes your Mac’s Firewall can interfere with your internet connection by assuming it is an unauthorized connection. To get around this, you should try disabling the Firewall and check whether that solves the internet problem on your MacOS Sonoma.

  • Go to the System Settings on your Mac
  • Click on Network.
  • On the network selection tab, click on the Firewall option.
  • Switch off your Mac’s Firewall by toggling the switch.

Now try using the internet on your Mac again. If it still does not work, move on to the next solution.

Create a new network location.

Usually, your Mac would pick a location automatically. But if it is struggling to do, you should manually add a new network location.

  • Go to Apple Menu.
  • Click on System Preferences.
  • Click on Network.
  • Open the location dropdown menu.
  • Click the Edit Locations option and then the Plus(+) icon to add a new location.
  • Click on Done and then click on Apply.

Now try using the internet on your Mac again. If it still does not work, move on to the next solution.

Remove installed Profiles on your Mac:

Some apps ask the user to install configuration profiles on the Mac to run optimally. However, this can hinder the internet connection for some users. So try to remove the profile on your Mac and check whether that solves your internet connection issue.

  • Go to Apple Menu.
  • Click on System Preferences.
  • Click on Profiles.
  • Select a Profile from the list that seems suspicious to you and then click on the minus(-) icon to remove it.

Now try using the internet on your Mac again. If it still does not work, move on to the next solution.

Delete Network Preferences From MacOS:

Before trying out this process, back up your MacO; you can use this backup to reload the OS if something goes wrong.

  • Open Finder.
  • Go to the top menu bar and enter “/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration.”
  • Find the files mentioned below and delete all of them.

com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
com.apple.network.identification.plist
NetworkInterfaces.plist
preferences.plist
Settings.plist

  • That is okay if you cannot find one of these files in the directory. Delete the ones you do see.

Now try reconnecting to the internet. If it still does not work, try the next solution.

Renew DHCP Lease:

Renewing your network’s DHCP Lease creates a new connection with a new IPV4 address, Subnet Mask and Router. This could fix your internet connectivity-related issue as well.

  • Click on the Apple icon in the menu bar and choose System Preferences from the list of available options.
  • Click on Network.
  • Now, click on the WiFi option on the window’s left pane.
  • On the right pane, you will see the Advanced button. Click on it.
  • Go to the TCP/IP section from the above multiple tabs.
  • Click on Renew DHCP Lease.
  • Disconnect the WiFi and try reconnecting.

Now try reconnecting to the internet. If it still does not work, try the next solution.

Check DNS Settings:

Some connectivity issues are sometimes related to incorrect DNS settings. It could be a possibility for you as well.

  • Launch Safari or any similar browser and enter https://17.172.224.47 in the URL field.
  • If you are taken to Apple’s official website, your internet works fine. Now we can get to the domain names.
  • Click on the Apple icon in the menu bar and choose System Preferences from the list of available options.
  • Click on Network.
  • Now, click on the WiFi option on the window’s left pane.
  • On the right pane, you will see the Advanced button. Click on it.
  • Go to the DNS tab.
  • Click on the + icon and enter 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.8.4.
  • Drag these DNS servers to the top of the list so that it becomes a priority.
  • Click on Ok, then click Apply to save the changes.

Now try reconnecting to the internet. If it still does not work, try the next solution.

Reset NVRAM, PRAM, And SMC:

NVRAM and PRAM are memory units that store specific settings for quick access. It is similar to what we have on Android smartphones as cache memory. And sometimes, a MacOS issue can be resolved simply by resetting the NVRAM and PRAM. So it would be best if you also tried it for the internet connectivity issue.

  • Click the Apple menu.
  • Choose the Shut Down option.
  • Turn on your Mac, and immediately after pressing the power button, press and hold the Option + Command + P + R keys for about 20 seconds.

This will clear the NVRAM and PRAM for you.

Another component that you can try resetting is the System Management Controller or SMC.

  • Click the Apple menu.

Update MacOS:

The MacOS Sonoma is on a beta build right now, and beta builds are bound to have bugs. If you installed an early beta build of Sonoma and have not updated your MacOS in a while, you should check for a new build of the Sonoma beta version. Apple would have patched it through an update if an internet connectivity issue was prevalent in an early beta build.

  • Go to Apple Menu.
  • Click on System Preferences.
  • Click on Software update. If you see a pending update, install it on your PC.

Remember that Apple has now introduced a setting in the Update menu that lets users select the updates they want. Since this is a beta OS, you need to enable the option to allow Apple to send your beta updates. The choice is available in the update menu at the top as a simple dropdown menu. If you set it off, you will only receive public build updates. However, if you want to install the latest beta builds, you need to make the selection here.

If updating the MacOS Sonoma to the latest beta build does not help with the internet connectivity issue, move on to the following given solution.

Contact Apple Support:

If none of the solutions mentioned above worked for you, you should contact Apple support via Mail or phone. They should be able to provide you with a solution for your internet connectivity issue with the MacOS Sonoma. If even they can’t help you, you should consider switching back or downgrading to a public build of MacOS and wait until the public build of Sonoma is released to install it again on your PC.
