Philips Hue Bulb Not Turning on or off

Philips hue bulbs are smart color-changing bulbs that can be controlled wirelessly. They are compatible with Alexa, Google Home, Apple home kit, and other devices. Hue bulbs are only one of their kind in the market and are users’ first choice. But many users have been facing constant problems with their Philips Hue Bulb as they are not turning on or off.

In this article, we will try to solve the Philips hue bulb not turning on and off glitch with the help of a few simple methods: 

Method 1: Restart Hue Bridge

A hue bridge is used to connect multiple hue bulbs at a time. If you are using one, try restarting it.

To Restart the Hue bridge:

Step 1: Unplug the power cord and wait for 30 seconds

Step 2: Wait for a few minutes for the bridge to start up

You need to connect Hue bridge to the same wi-fi network as your mobile device for it to work. Also, make sure the internet is up and running.

Method 2: Restart your Router

Since the Hue app needs a working internet connection to work, maybe the problem is with your internet connection. Restarting your wi-fi router might fix the problem. Also please check if your internet is working or not. 


Restarting your Wi-fi router doesn’t mean resetting it. Restarting and Resetting are two different operations. Please only Restart your router.

Method 3: Update the Hue App to the latest version

Check if there is the newest update for the Hue app. If there is one, please immediately update the app to the newest build and check if the issue persists. 

To update the Hue app: 

Open Playstore/Appstore and search for the Hue app. 

Click on the update button and wait for it to install.

Make sure the app is installed successfully. 

Method 4: Uninstall and Reinstall the Hue app

Before we go for the complex fixes, let’s try to fix this app with a simple fix. Uninstall and reinstall the Hue app and check if the hue bulb is working. Don’t just clear the data of the Hue app and check. Uninstall and reinstall it from scratch for the best results.

Method 5: Check your Bluetooth connection

All these bulbs work with the help of Bluetooth. So, make sure you are near to the bulbs when controlling them, and also make sure you are on the latest Bluetooth version.

Method 6: Remove and add the bulb to the Hue app

Try removing and adding the bulb in the hue app. After removing the bulb, first, close the app and force stop it[ Settings -> App and games -> Select Hue App -> Tap clear data and cache]. Then open the app again then add the bulb.

To add a bulb in the Hue app:

Step 1: From the Add light screen, tap Use serial number

Step 2:  Now, Type the Text characters printed on your bulb.

Method 7: Switch on the light switches of the Hue bulb

Philips Hue bulbs only work when the light switch they’re connected to is turned on. Check the plugboard switches for the bulb you are trying to turn on. If the switch is turned off, try turning it off and on. 

Never turn off the plugboard switch of the Hue bulb. There is some glitch that is triggered when the switch is turned off. So, be careful.

Method 8: Check if the bulb is defective
