Previous generation Pixel smartphones didn’t have better battery life and most users faced the same until the latest generation Pixel 9 series launched. That might depend on the chipset, memory management, low battery capacity, etc. But this time Google has done a pretty good job with battery backup that we’ve seen on critic reviews and forums. However, the good time hasn’t arrived yet for a few users as the Google Pixel 9, 9 Pro, and 9 Pro XL Battery Draining Issue is still troubling.

It seems that somehow the bad streak of having worse battery life is hunting Pixel 9 series owners even after several improvements from Google. The Google Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro come with a 4,700mAh battery that can run around 13 hours. Whereas the Pixel 9 Pro XL does have a 5,060mAh battery capacity that can also deliver up to 13 hours in an adaptive state. So, users are quite satisfied with the increased battery life over last year’s Pixel 8 series overall. In case, you’re unfortunate to experience drastic battery drain, don’t worry.

Steps to Fix Google Pixel 9, 9 Pro, and 9 Pro XL Battery Draining Issue
Battery draining can be a major issue that needs to be resolved to avoid multiple charging sessions and performance drops. Here we’ve shared with you a couple of workarounds that should come in handy. So, without further ado, let’s get into it.
1. Restart Your Phone
Without thinking anything for a second, you should restart your Pixel 9 series phone to clear any temporary system glitch that’s causing the battery to drain rapidly.
- Press and hold the Power button + Volume Up button for a few seconds.
- Tap on Restart.
- Wait for it and use your device for a while to check for any differences.
2. Check for Android Updates
Most importantly, an outdated or unoptimized software version can cause issues with the battery draining and performance drops. It’s recommended to check for Android updates periodically.
- Open your phone’s Settings app.
- Go to System > Tap on Software Update.
- When the update status appears on your screen, follow the on-screen steps.
- Once done, wait for the device to reboot.
3. Check for App Updates
Having outdated applications installed on your phone might also trigger issues with the battery draining. You should check for app updates and install them once a week.
- Open the Google Play Store app.
- At the top right corner, tap on the profile icon.
- Tap on Manage apps & devices.
- Head over to ‘Updates available’.
- Tap on ‘Update all apps’.
- Let it complete and reboot the device.
4. Close Battery Consuming Apps
Try force-closing battery-consuming apps that are running in the background all the time and drain the battery faster. After launching applications, some don’t close completely and cause such an issue.
- Open your phone’s Settings app.
- Tap on Battery > Hit Battery usage.
- Tap on View by apps.
- Now, tap on the app or system to review the listed app that uses the battery.
- Go back to the main settings menu.
- Tap on Apps > Hit App battery usage.
- If applicable, tap on Restrict.
Note: In the ‘Restricted’ status, the specific app may not work properly or notifications can be delayed.
5. Force Stop Problematic Apps
Force-stopping problematic applications on your Pixel 9 series device may help in reducing excessive battery draining.
Please Note: If you force stop some essential apps or services, your phone won’t work correctly. Force stop isn’t available for all apps.
- Open your phone’s Settings app.
- Tap on Apps > Hit See all apps.
- Tap on the specific app.
- Hit Force Stop > Select OK.
6. Turn On Adaptive Battery
If you keep Adaptive Battery on, less used apps won’t run until you open them. By doing so, your phone’s system will learn how to use your apps over time to save battery.
- Open your phone’s Settings app.
- Tap on Battery > Hit Battery Saver.
- Tap on Adaptive Battery > Tap on More.
- Turn On ‘Use Adaptive Battery’.
Useful Tip: The Adaptive Battery feature may reduce performance and delay incoming notifications to optimize the battery further.
7. Enable Battery Optimization
Another thing you can do is to enable the battery optimization feature on your Pixel 9 series by following the steps below.
- Open your phone’s Settings app.
- Tap on Apps > Hit See all apps.
- Choose your specific app.
- Tap on Battery.
- Go to ‘Manage battery usage’.
- Tap on Optimized.
Note: Battery optimization isn’t available for all services.
8. Schedule Automatic Battery Saver Mode
You can also schedule an automatic battery-saver mode feature on your Pixel 9, 9 Pro, or 9 Pro XL to tell the device when to turn on the battery-saver automatically.
- Open your phone’s Settings app.
- Tap on Battery > Select Battery Saver.
- Tap on Schedule and Reminders.
- Enable the ‘Turn on based on battery level’ toggle.
- Now, slide the percentage bar to the battery level you want.
Recommendation: We recommend you set the battery level at 20% to turn on the battery-saver mode automatically for you.
9. Try Using Extreme Battery Saver
You can also save more power with Extreme Battery Saver which allows more features or services to turn off when necessary. But you can choose which apps you don’t want to restrict.
- Open your phone’s Settings app.
- Tap on Battery > Go to Battery Saver.
- Turn On ‘Extreme Battery Saver’.
- Go to Essential Apps > Choose which apps you’ll use.
Note: Restricted apps won’t send notifications.
10. Avoid Charging Overnight
Sometimes charging devices overnight can also cause issues with the battery health and overheating. Though the latest Android devices work with adaptive charging, don’t let your handset charge for longer hours.
11. Keep Your Phone Cool
Not to mention that keeping your device cool in several ways can help improve battery health and reduce battery drain. Avoid using your handset in hot temperatures or under direct sunlight. If you’re gaming or using multiple apps, close all of them and keep it cool down. Try not to use Bluetooth, location service, and mobile data all the time.
12. Reset to Factory Settings
Make sure to perform a factory reset on your device to fix multiple issues like software glitches, cache data, app crashes, etc. It also helps to reduce the battery draining in most cases. But you’ll need to be careful with data backup before doing this. As your device will boot to the factory default state, most data will be removed. So, taking a data backup is important.
- Open your phone’s Settings app.
- Tap on Google > Tap on Backup.
- If this is your first time, turn on Backup by Google One and follow the on-screen instructions. [Optional]
- Tap on Back up now.
Note: Your Google One backup can take up to 24 hours. When your data is saved, ‘On’ will be below the data types you selected. Also, keep in mind that you’ll require a Google account credential to sign back into the service after reset.
- Open your phone’s Settings app.
- Tap on System > Tap on Reset options.
- Select Erase all data (factory reset).
- To erase all data from your phone’s internal storage, tap on Erase all data.
- If required, your phone asks for your PIN. Enter your PIN and tap on Erase all data.
- It may take a couple of minutes to complete the process.
- Once done, choose the restart option.
- Finally, set up the initial configuration and restore your data.
13. Replace the Phone or Battery
Last but not least, you should visit the authorized service centre to replace the Pixel 9 series device or the problematic battery to fix the issue. If the manufacturer warranty is available, the process will be much smoother. Additionally, you may have to pay some charges for the battery replacement in some cases.
