The PS4 is a powerful machine that sometimes throttles when pushed to its limits. The device gets hot, and to make the PS4 cooler, the built-in fans blast at full speed. This does not always happen, but only with long play sessions of AAA titles. However, recently, some users are complaining that their device’s fan noise is becoming more evident.

This could be the case if you play a title requiring many resources. But abnormal fan noise on the PS4 is always an area of concern. To fix this, you can try a few solutions. Here in this article, we will discuss all of them for you. Indeed one of the solutions mentioned below should work for you. So without any further ado, let’s get into it.

Reason Why PS4 Fan Loud and How to Fix it?

The most apparent reason behind the Fans on PS4 being loud is that a lot of dust is accumulated in the device’s internals. Cleaning out the fan and other components of the PS4 internally should be enough to fix the loud fan noise issue. Besides this common reason, another reason could be the room’s temperature. If your PlayStation is kept in a place that is always hot and humid, that could also be the cause. Playing AAA titles is already internally burning the processor; external temperature only adds to the overall heat.

Now that we know the reasons behind the loud fan noise let’s fix it.

Place the PS4 in a ventilated area:

The fans on the PS4 kick in when the internals get hot. The fans try their best to remove the heat from the device as much as possible so that the internals are not damaged from the heat and the user continues to get decent performance out of the device. But with no airflow, the fans won’t be able to cool out anything.

So if your PS4 is covered with things like towels or small mats, remove them immediately. Furthermore, if there are any objects near the back or sides of the device, you must also remove them. It would be best to ensure that nothing disturbs the airflow the fans are pushing in and out of the device. The air’s inwards and outward paths must be free of anything blocking them.

If this does not help with the problem of loud fan noise, move on to the next fix.

Clean the internals of the device:

We do not recommend this method if your PS4 is new and it is still under warranty. The warranty will be void when you open the device independently. So if your device is under contract, you should send it to Sony and inform them about your loud fan noise issue.

But if the warranty period is over for the device, you can open it up without any issues.

  • You must use a T8 or T9 torx security bit screwdriver to remove the console’s screws.
  • After removing all the screws on the back, remove the back panel. There will be a total of 4 screws.
  • Once the back panel is removed, you will see the fan. Scrutinize the fan and clear out any dust on it. Apart from the fan, also look at the inlets and outlets near the sides of the fan. If you see any dust on them, clear them out as well. If sufficient air is not coming into the device, the fans will always spin harder to cool up the device.

After properly cleaning up the PS4, place the back cover again and screw it up properly with all the screws. Now check whether the loud fan noise still exists or not. If it is still there, try the next solution.

Use compressed air:

Cans of compressed air are readily available in departmental stores. You can get one such can to clear out the input and output vents around the PS4.

Now check whether the loud fan noise still exists or not. If it is still there, try the next solution.

Change the orientation:

If you have only placed the PS4 in a horizontal orientation all the time, it is time you give it a change. Change the direction to vertical from flat, and that might work out. Similarly, if you have always used it vertically, try switching to a horizontal direction.

If changing the orientation also does not help your case, move on to the next solution.

Update the console:

If none of the solutions worked for you, you might face a bug in your OS. It would be best to try updating the OS to the latest version to fix this.

  • Turn on the PS4 and go to the main dashboard
  • From there, using the bar at the top, go to the Settings menu.
  • Look for the System Software Update option in the Settings menu.
  • Once you find it, select it using your controller.
  • Then follow the instructions that show up on your screen and then install the update on your console.

The update should resolve your problem. If it does not help you, you should contact Sony customer service support. They should be able;e to provide you with a solution or take up your device for the required service.
