The default UI skin for OnePlus smartphones is OxygenOS, which provides various Android customizations not obtainable from stock Android. It was updated in May for the OnePlus 7 and 8 smartphone series, with some new additions for even better user experience. There were some subtractions as well, including Pocket Mode, a feature that could be found under Utilities in Settings before the update, but is now nowhere to be found after the latest update. If your OnePlus 7 or OnePlus 7 Pro has this issue, this article contains steps to restore the missing Pocket Mode toggle in OxygenOS on these phones.
Pocket Mode helps to prevent your touch screen from being accidentally operated while it is in your pocket. If Pocket Mode is enabled and the phone detects that the screen is blocked, you won’t be able to carry out some functions like double-tapping to open or even use the fingerprint sensor.
With the new update and the absence of the Pocket Mode in the settings, it is automatically assumed that the feature is simply no longer available. It would surprise you to find out that it actually is still available, running in the background, and as you can’t toggle it on or off in Settings, it is on by default.

Even if it is not in your pocket, it can still work; once it senses that the screen is locked, the phone believes it is still in your pocket, and you cannot carry out certain functions.
Steps to restore the Pocket Mode toggle
There is, however, a way to restore the toggle for Pocket Mode under Utilities in the Settings app, but for you to be able to use this fix on your phone, it has to be rooted. If your phone is rooted, then you can go ahead to carry out this very easy fix with the below steps:
- Navigate to the /system/etc/ directory from the phone’s root folder, and locate the feature_list file. Open the file in any text editor of your choice.
- Add the below text snippet just before the last closing bracket (“]”) in the file:
- Save the changes and close the file.
- Reboot your phone.
- Check under Utilities in Settings; the Pocket Mode option should be there already.
By default, Pocket Mode would show as disabled, and you have to toggle it on and then back off to ensure that it is really turned off.
We’ve witnessed this issue of OxygenOS updates breaking existing features on OnePlus devices before, a recent example being one that affects Dolby Atmos equalizer settings on the OnePlus 7 and 8 series. We’ve covered how to fix this and many more and will continue to do so as more of these issues surface, so watch this space :).
