Since Sony’s entrance into the Android smartphones market, we have regularly seen many models with the ‘Compact’ title. The latest of this series is the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact announced back in October. As the name suggests, this phone is the slightly lightened version of the original Sony Xperia XZ1. Though the latter has been considered to be one of the most popular flagships, not all of its features are excellent. Those shortcomings have been inherited by this model as well. But even with all those disadvantages, the Xperia XZ1 Compact is very attractive when it comes to the Sony-made design, good performance, and … low price tag.

Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact Appearance
Actually, this phone comes with a familiar design seen on all Xperia-line models. So it’s a waste of time to list the design elements of the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact. It’s better to talk about the colors it comes with. This handset has been launched in four options including the Black, White Silver, Horizon Blue, and Twilight Pink. As you see, we are dealing with the latter.
Though many call it simply – pink, the truth is it has a unique shade. That’s why depending on the lighting conditions it turns into orange. So this unit differs from many other ‘pink’ smartphones with its coloring. However, it’s obvious this color option has been made for females.
This handset uses a one-piece plastic body. But the upper and lower parts are made of metal. Though the company has made them of metal, many criticize it. Many users say the scratches appear on it even after the first month of use.
Anyway, the whole body passes through a sandblasting process to provide a metal-like appearance. So if you are not an expert in body materials, probably you won’t have a feeling for a plastic shell. At last, this material also makes the phone a lightweight. It weighs only 143 grams, which is almost identical to the iPhone 6S.
On the back, we have a unique design. Though the single-camera is placed in the left upper corner and catches eyes with its large size, the flashlight accompanies with a couple sensors is on the upper middle part. Meizu has tried to do something like that, but this gives a uniqueness to the phone.
The Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact is a small handset comfortable for single hand operations. But it’s a quite bulky phone with a thickness of 9.3mm. It can be seen when looking at it aside. However, as usual, the company has put a dedicated camera key below the power button on the right side. The power key also hides a fingerprint scanner. The NFC logo on the back also hints this phone can be used for fingerprint payment operations.
Though it’s unusual to see smartphones with a screen size smaller than 5 inches, the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact comes with a 4.6-inch display. The latter provides a resolution of 720p and pixel density of 319ppi. These features are not impressive when they are on paper. But when it comes to the actual experience, we see Sony still rocks with its high-quality screens. This phone is no exception. We have to state the Xperia XZ1 Compact is packed with a screen that stands out among other models available in the market and belonging to the same category. It still provides good color reproduction and viewing experience. Unfortunately, it doesn’t support HDR. On the other hand, when recalling its price tag, this feature is quite acceptable.
There are two speakers on the front. One is placed above the screen, while the second one is below it. There is also a front panel, LED to view various notifications and a standard set of sensors placed on the forehead.
Though the chin is large and can carry anything you want, Sony has canceled home button design long ago. So there is nothing but the speaker.
Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact Performance
Those who have used a Sony smartphone ever will look for Sony when it comes to purchasing a new phone. This is mainly conditioned by the fact Sony has developed a great UI based on the Android operating system. This model comes with Android 8.0 out of the box. But this system won’t make a sense without a powerful hardware under the hood. The Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact is packed with a Snapdragon 835 high-end chip, which is paired with a 4+32GB memory combination.
This is one of the selling points of the Xperia XZ1 Compact. It is equipped with a 2700mAh battery, which works under the control of Sony software. It is capable of detecting when the phone is being charged, and control it. Say, when you charge it during the night, the system will regulate the charging speed and input power. This feature will help the battery in serving you longer.
The battery was tested in order to measure the endurance. The minimum battery life was 7 hours and 13 minutes.
Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact Camera
There are myriads of smartphones even from less-known brands that sport dual- and quad-camera modules. Though this handset has no camera option common with the abovementioned features, it is a Sony device providing an astonishing shooting performance. It comes with a 19MP rear camera using a f/2.0 aperture, gyro EIS, and PDA. The front camera uses an 8MP sensor with a f/2.4 aperture and the same gyro EIS.
Looking at the photo samples below we can state this handset is great when taking photos under the direct sunlight. It provides a good color reproduction. But it’s not recommended to use this phone for taking macro photos.
This is the same camera configuration found on the Sony Xperia XZ Premium. But the tricks is the latter doesn’t boast of its camera because of mid-class shooting experience. As a Sony user, I have to say, Xperia line models have been always known for strong manual shooting mode. So it requires some time to get experienced with its camera and become a professional.
When the company announced this model, it became clear the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact is aiming at a quite specific market. Look, it’s a budget-friendly smartphone coming our way from a top brand. It sports a small screen size as well as a small body. But surprisingly it runs on Snapdragon 835 and Android 8.0 Oreo making it one of the most powerful devices on the market. The design is not too much attractive due to the bulkiness and plastic housing. But there are all required design elements including a dedicated camera button, an NFC-powered unlock key, two speakers, and many more. So we have to say, it’s quite difficult to find another smartphone identical to the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact.
