History of Lineage OS

As already mentioned above, Lineage OS is the successor to the already very popular CyanogenMod custom ROM. The CyanogenMod closed the project in December 2016. However the same year and in the same month, LineageOS came into existence. The Lineage OS is pretty close to the stock version of the Google launcher but, with some added features and extra customization features. Moreover, one of the best things about Lineage OS is that it lets you update the Android version even if your OEM has stopped official updates long ago.

It is written in C++ and the latest version i.e. Lineage OS 16, released very recently. It is based on platforms ARM, ARM64, x86, and x86-64. Its latest release, the Lineage OS 16 is based on the Android 9 Pie. You can check out the version history of the Lineage OS below;

Why CyanogenMod discontinued?

The CyanogenMod was one of the popular custom ROM and was widely used by Android users to customize their smartphones. But you might be thinking why CyanogenMod discontinued? How CyanogenMod turned into a non-profit project? The answer to this is probably because of the developers associated with CyanogenMod. However, one interesting fact related to CyanogenMod is that the co-founder, Kirt McMaster rejected a buyout worth $1 Billion offered by Google as he was so confident that he stated, “put a bullet through Google’s head”, and the rest is history.

And this eventually lead CyanogenMod to misery as it failed to attract interest it wished to gain from Android hardware manufacturers. And, as mentioned above, finally, CyanogenMod ended their operations and pulled back their relationship with the Chinese Smartphone maker OnePlus. Moreover, they handed over the rights of CyanogenMod to an Indian OEM. It is also in reports that CyanogenMods sold its rights to the Indian OEM behind OnePlus’s back and thus, happened the misfortune.
