You spend ten minutes building the perfect class in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, jump into a match, and find your loadout has reset or your weapon build has disappeared. You’re not alone. Loadouts not saving is one of the most reported problems since the game launched on October 23, and Activision has confirmed that part of it is a bug.

However, not every missing loadout is caused by that bug. Some changes to how Modern Warfare 4 saves weapon builds, along with a few Prestige-related problems, can make it look like your classes aren’t saving when there’s actually something else going on. In this guide, we’ll explain the different causes and what you can do about each one.

Modern Warfare 4 Loadouts Not Saving

Is Modern Warfare 4 Loadouts Not Saving a Known Issue?

Yes. Activision’s Known Issues page for Modern Warfare 4 lists a problem that prevents some players from saving Loadouts in Multiplayer. It affects all platforms and is under investigation. At the time of writing, Activision hasn’t posted an official workaround or a date for a fix.

Since launch, several related loadout bugs have also been patched in the game’s early updates, so making sure you’re on the latest version is the first thing to do.

Why Your Modern Warfare 4 Loadout Isn’t Saving

  • The confirmed Multiplayer save bug that Activision is investigating.
  • Weapon builds aren’t saved automatically. Leaving Gunsmith doesn’t save your build for you.
  • Weapon Prestige resets attachments on that gun, so any class using it changes.
  • The Classic Prestige class bug, which stops some players from creating new classes when old ones contain relocked items.
  • Create-a-Class isn’t unlocked yet, because it requires Player Level 4.
  • An outdated game version that’s still missing the early loadout fixes.

Fix: Modern Warfare 4 Loadouts Not Saving

1. Update the Game to the Latest Version

Infinity Ward has already released several fixes for loadout problems since launch, including issues where DMZ builds showed up in Multiplayer classes, loadouts weren’t cleared correctly on Prestige, and the game froze the first time you edited a loadout during a match. If you’re on an older version, you might still be running into these.

  • PS5: Highlight the game, press Options, and choose Check for Update.
  • Xbox: Go to My games & apps > Manage > Updates.
  • Battle.net: Click the gear icon next to Play and select Check for Updates.
  • Steam: Check your Downloads page for a pending update.

2. Save Your Weapon Builds Manually in Gunsmith

This is the most common reason builds seem to disappear. In Modern Warfare 4, leaving Gunsmith doesn’t save your weapon build automatically, and applying an attachment or a suggested setup isn’t the same as saving it.

  1. Open Gunsmith and set up your weapon.
  2. Use the Save Build option before you back out, and give the build a name.
  3. Reopen the weapon’s saved builds and check that your build is there.
  4. Then equip that saved build in your class.

Keep in mind that changes you make to a loadout during a match are saved automatically, so check which build is selected if your class looks different after a game.

3. Rebuild Classes After Weapon Prestige

When you Prestige a weapon, its attachments reset. Any class that uses that weapon will change as a result, which can look like the class didn’t save. Your camos and blueprints are kept.

After you Prestige a weapon, open every class that uses it, rebuild the attachments, and save again. Also note that Weapon Prestige and Player Prestige aren’t available while you’re searching for a match.

There’s also a separate known issue where Military Camos and Apex attachments relock after Weapon Prestige. If those unlocks matter to you, you may want to hold off on prestiging that weapon until Infinity Ward fixes it.

4. Delete Classes With Relocked Items (Classic Prestige Bug)

Some players who entered Classic Prestige through the DMZ menus can’t create new Multiplayer classes if their old classes still contain items that have relocked. Infinity Ward’s official workaround is simple:

  1. Open your Multiplayer classes.
  2. Find any class that includes a relocked item. These are usually marked with a lock icon.
  3. Delete those classes.
  4. Create your new classes again.

Infinity Ward has said a fix for this is being tested. Until then, entering Prestige from the Multiplayer menu rather than the DMZ menu appears to avoid the problem.

5. Check Your Player Level

If you can’t edit classes at all, check your level. Create-a-Class in Multiplayer unlocks at Player Level 4. Until then, you can only use the default loadouts. This isn’t a saving problem, and it goes away once you level up.

6. Restart the Game Before Editing Your Classes

Activision is also investigating an issue on PC where connection timeouts cause an “Update Requires Restart” prompt. If your connection to the servers drops while you’re editing a class, your changes may not be saved online.

Fully close and restart the game before editing classes, and make sure you’re on a stable connection. A wired Ethernet connection helps here.

7. Recheck Your Class Before Every Match

Until Activision fixes the main Multiplayer save bug, the most reliable workaround is to open your class before each match and confirm it’s set up the way you want. If something has reset, fix it and save again before you queue up.

You can also test your classes in the Firing Range in Multiplayer, but remember that using a weapon there doesn’t confirm that a build or class has been saved.

8. Report the Problem to Activision

If your loadouts still won’t save and your problem isn’t one of the cases above, report it through Activision’s Modern Warfare 4 support page. Include your platform, region, the mode you were playing, the weapon, and exactly what failed to save. There’s no need to report the known Multiplayer save issue again, as Activision is already investigating it.

Reinstalling the game or deleting local files isn’t a recommended fix for this problem. Your loadouts are stored on Activision’s servers, not on your device.

Conclusion

Modern Warfare 4 loadouts not saving is partly a confirmed bug that Activision is investigating, but many cases have a simpler cause. Update the game first, then make sure you’re manually saving weapon builds in Gunsmith and rebuilding classes after Weapon Prestige. If you can’t create new classes after Classic Prestige, delete any classes with relocked items. Until the main bug is fixed, check your class before every match.

We’ll update this guide when Activision releases a fix. In the meantime, let us know in the comments if you’ve found another workaround.
