Pixel 7 and 7 Pro Freezes or Restart When Watching Videos on Youtube

Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro are the best Android smartphones to buy now. But these devices don’t come without compromises. In fact, despite the software being the USP of Pixel smartphones, they are struggling with some common bugs that many users are now accustomed to.

One such issue is with the fullscreen issue of Youtube. Some, not all, Pixel 7 and 7 Pro users have reported that when they try to watch Youtube videos in full-screen mode, the device stops responding entirely and restarts itself. Let’s take a detailed look into the matter here.

The problems that the users encountered varied. For some, the navigation gestures and the hardware buttons stop responding entirely. For some, the audio continued to play in the background with the video frozen up, while the video and the audio playback froze up for some.

For some, the smartphone did a 3-second reboot, while some had to press and hold the power button to restart it forcefully.

A point to note here is the issue is only evident in the full-screen video mode. If the video plays in a standard window or on the browser, it works fine, even in fullscreen mode. The issue arises particularly with the Youtube app playing videos in fullscreen mode.

And this is evident only in Pixel phones. Samsung or iPhones running the same version of the Youtube application are not encountering any such issue. So it is safe to assume that the issue is common to Tensor chip smartphones. Even some Pixel 6A users with tensor chips have reported this problem.

However, the issue does not arise every time the user switches to fullscreen mode. It only occurs sometimes entirely randomly, and it stays the same until you perform a reboot.

Hopefully, Google will address this issue in its future updates to the Pixel 7 series. For now, force restarting seems to be the only solution. Until Google pushes out an update to fix this, we recommend using the web browser to access Youtube in full-screen mode in your Pixel 7 or Pixel 7 Pro.
