Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 checks for updates every time you launch it. Normally this takes a few seconds, but many players are finding the game stuck on “Checking for Update” with a spinner that never stops. Sometimes it moves on after a long wait, and sometimes it doesn’t move at all, leaving you unable to reach the main menu.
This usually happens when the game can’t reach Activision’s update servers, or when it finds that part of the game is missing or incomplete. Launch-week patches and the content pack system used by recent Call of Duty games make this especially common right now. Below, we’ll walk you through the fixes for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Why Is Modern Warfare 4 Stuck on Checking for Update?
- Server load or maintenance during launch week or while a new patch is rolling out.
- A missing or incomplete content pack, such as the Multiplayer or DMZ pack.
- A paused or queued update on your console or launcher.
- Corrupted update files after a failed patch, a forced shutdown, or a storage error.
- Not enough free storage to unpack the update.
- Network problems, such as DNS issues, Wi-Fi drops, a VPN, or a firewall blocking the launcher.
Fix: Modern Warfare 4 Stuck on Checking for Update
1. Give It a Few Minutes, Then Check the Servers
When lots of players launch at once, the update check really can take several minutes, so be patient for at least two or three before you start changing things. Still spinning after that? Pull up Activision’s Online Services page. If it shows a problem and other players are reporting the same thing, sit tight until Activision sorts it out. Reinstalling won’t help in that situation.
2. Quit the Game and Power-Cycle Your System
- PC: After closing the game, shut down your launcher from the system tray too. Then press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager and end any leftover Call of Duty, Battle.net, or Steam processes before trying again.
- PS5: Close Modern Warfare 4 from the home screen first, then power the console off completely instead of putting it into Rest Mode.
- Xbox Series X|S: After quitting the game, hold down the console’s power button for 10 seconds, then unplug it for 30 seconds before starting it again.
3. Clear Any Queued Game or System Updates
Very often, the game is waiting on an update that’s paused, queued behind something else, or still downloading.
- PS5: Highlight Modern Warfare 4 on the home screen, press the Options button, and select Check for Update. Then check Downloads/Uploads for anything paused, and update your system software under Settings > System > System Software.
- Xbox: Go to My games & apps > Manage > Updates, install anything waiting for Modern Warfare 4, and check for console updates under Settings > System > Updates.
- Battle.net: Select Call of Duty, click the gear icon next to Play, and choose Check for Updates.
- Steam: Open your Downloads page and make sure no Call of Duty update is paused or queued.
4. Install the Missing Content Packs
Recent Call of Duty games are split into separate content packs. If one of the Modern Warfare 4 packs is missing or only partly installed, the game can get stuck checking for updates.
- Xbox: Highlight the game, press the Menu button, and choose Manage game and add-ons. Check that all Modern Warfare 4 packs are installed, and install any that aren’t. Go by each pack’s name and install status rather than its artwork, as some packs may show older Call of Duty images.
- PS5: Press Options on the game, choose Manage Game Content, and install any Modern Warfare 4 packs that aren’t installed.
- Xbox app on PC: Activision recommends installing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 – Content Pack 1 from the game’s Manage page.
5. Make Room on Your Drive
Updates need extra space to unpack before they install. If your drive is nearly full, the update can stall without any clear error. Delete games or media you don’t need, then try again. On PC, make sure the drive where the game is installed has plenty of free space.
6. Run a File Check From Your Launcher
If an earlier patch was interrupted, the launcher may keep looping on the update check because it finds files that don’t match. A quick integrity check sorts this out:
- Battle.net: Use Scan and Repair, found under the cog icon next to Play.
- Steam: Right-click the game in your Library and go to Properties, then Installed Files, then Verify integrity of game files.
- Xbox app: Choose Manage from the game’s menu, switch to Files, and run Verify and repair.
7. Wipe the Launcher’s Cache
Steam: Go to Steam > Settings > Downloads and click Clear Download Cache. This doesn’t remove your installed games. You can also change your download region to a nearby location on the same page.
Battle.net:
- Exit Battle.net completely and end any Blizzard or Battle.net processes in Task Manager.
- Press Win + R, type
%ProgramData%, and press Enter.
- Open the Blizzard Entertainment folder, then Battle.net, and delete the Cache folder.
- Restart Battle.net and launch the game again.
8. Refresh Your DNS and Internet Connection
The update check needs a clean path to Activision’s servers. These quick network fixes often get it moving again:
- Switch off your modem and router at the plug, count to sixty, and switch them back on.
- On a PC, run
ipconfig /flushdns in an elevated Command Prompt to throw away cached DNS records.
- Point your connection at a public DNS service instead of your provider’s. Cloudflare uses 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1, and Google uses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
- Wire your device to the router if you can, and hold off on other big downloads or streams until the update finishes.
9. Make Sure Nothing Is Blocking the Launcher
VPNs often route traffic through servers that struggle to reach Activision’s update service, so switch yours off for now. On PC, check that Windows Firewall isn’t stopping the launcher: go to Allow an app through Windows Firewall, click Change settings, and confirm Call of Duty and Battle.net, Steam, or the Xbox app are allowed. Third-party antivirus users should whitelist the game folder too.
10. Reinstall the Affected Pack or the Game
If nothing else works, reinstalling may be the only way to replace a corrupted update. Before you do this, make sure the servers are online, so you don’t reinstall a game that was working fine.
- On consoles, try uninstalling and reinstalling just the Modern Warfare 4 content pack you’re trying to play first, rather than the entire game.
- Don’t delete your saved data unless Activision Support tells you to. Your progress is stored online.
Conclusion
When Modern Warfare 4 is stuck on “Checking for Update,” give it a few minutes and check the server status first. If the servers are fine, restart everything, install any pending game and system updates, and make sure every Modern Warfare 4 content pack is installed. On PC, repairing the game files and clearing the launcher cache fixes most cases. Reinstalling should be your last resort.
