Few things are more frustrating than finally launching Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and then staring at “Connecting to Online Services” for minutes on end. Sometimes the spinner eventually times out with an error, and sometimes it never moves at all. Either way, you can’t get into Multiplayer, DMZ, or any other online mode.
This screen is where the game signs you in to your platform account and Activision’s servers at the same time. If either side fails, the game waits indefinitely. The good news is that the cause is usually easy to narrow down. In this guide, we’ll show you how to tell whether the problem is on Activision’s end or yours, and how to fix it on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2.
Why Is Modern Warfare 4 Stuck on Connecting to Online Services?
- Activision’s servers are down or overloaded. This was especially common during the launch-night unlock on October 23, and it can happen again after major updates.
- Your platform’s network is down, such as PlayStation Network, Xbox network, or Nintendo’s online services.
- You aren’t fully signed in to your PSN, Xbox, Nintendo, Steam, or Battle.net account.
- An update is still downloading in the background and competing with the sign-in.
- Your router, NAT type, or Wi-Fi is blocking or dropping the connection.
- The PC launcher is stuck, or the game files are incomplete after a patch.
- The Xbox app on PC is missing a content pack, or your Microsoft account has reached its device limit.
Fix: Modern Warfare 4 Stuck on Connecting to Online Services
Before you troubleshoot anything at home, find out whether the problem is bigger than you.
- On Activision’s Online Services page, pick Modern Warfare 4 and check for warnings.
- Then look up the status page for wherever you play: PlayStation Network, Xbox Status, Nintendo’s network status, Steam, or Battle.net.
All green, and your friends on the same platform are getting in fine? Then the issue is on your side, so keep going. If nobody can connect, it’s a server problem, and waiting 15 to 30 minutes is the only real fix.
2. Let Pending Downloads Complete
An unfinished patch or content pack can leave the game trying to connect forever. Open the download queue on your console or launcher, wait for everything to finish installing, and then launch the game again.
Modern Warfare 4 needs an active sign-in to your platform account before it can reach Activision’s servers.
- PS5: Check that you’re signed in to PlayStation Network and that your PlayStation Plus subscription is active for online multiplayer.
- Xbox: Check that you’re signed in to the Xbox network and that your Game Pass or Xbox membership is active for online multiplayer.
- Switch 2: Check that you’re signed in with your Nintendo Account and that Nintendo Switch Online is active.
- PC: Sign out of Steam, Battle.net, or the Xbox app, then sign back in.
4. Close Everything and Start Again
Once the game gets stuck on this screen, the session itself can stay stuck even after the servers recover. Starting over from a cold boot clears it.
- PC: Exit the game, then find the Battle.net, Steam, or Xbox app icon near the clock, right-click it, and choose Exit or Quit. Open the launcher again afterward.
- PS5: Shut the console down fully from the power menu instead of using Rest Mode.
- Xbox Series X|S: Do a hard reboot by holding the power button for 10 seconds, then leave the console unplugged for half a minute.
- Switch 2: Use POWER > Power Options > Turn Off, and give it 30 seconds before switching it back on.
5. Run a Network Test and Reboot the Router
Run your device’s built-in network test to make sure it can reach the internet:
- PS5: Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection
- Xbox: Settings > General > Network settings, then run Test network connection and Test multiplayer connection
- Switch 2: System Settings > Internet > Test Connection
Even if the test passes, give your network a fresh start: unplug the modem and router for a minute, power the modem up first, then the router. While you sign in, pause big downloads or streaming on other devices in the house, and plug in an Ethernet cable if one reaches.
6. Verify Your Installation on PC
On PC, a day-one patch that didn’t install completely can leave the game hanging at this stage. Each launcher has a built-in check for this:
- Battle.net: The cog beside Play opens a menu with Scan and Repair.
- Steam: Go into the game’s Properties, open Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Xbox app: From the game’s Manage page, the Files tab has a Verify and repair button.
7. Fix the Xbox App Issues (PC)
Activision lists two known problems for players using the Xbox app on PC:
- Missing content pack: Install Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 – Content Pack 1 from the game’s Manage page before launching.
- Device limit: Your Microsoft account can only have 10 devices registered for Microsoft Store downloads. Sign in to your Microsoft account’s device page and remove devices you no longer use.
8. Unblock the Game in Your Firewall and Drop the VPN
Security tools and VPNs can quietly interrupt the sign-in handshake on PC.
- Open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall.
- Click Change settings, then make sure Call of Duty and your launcher have both Private and Public ticked.
- If you rely on a third-party antivirus suite, add the game’s folder to its exclusions.
- Disconnect from any VPN before you start the game.
While you’re in Settings, also check Time & language > Date & time and make sure the time and time zone are set automatically. A clock that’s out of sync can cause secure sign-ins to fail.
9. Run Activision’s Router Tests
If the network test passes but the game still won’t connect, your router may be blocking the traffic Modern Warfare 4 needs. Activision recommends trying these settings one at a time:
- UPnP: Turn off any port forwarding rules for your device and enable UPnP on your router. Restart the router and test.
- Port forwarding: Turn UPnP off, give your device a static IP address, and forward the Call of Duty ports to it. UDP 3074 is used on every platform.
- DMZ (consoles only): Place your console’s static IP in your router’s DMZ, then test. Remove it from the DMZ when you’re done, because it exposes the device to the internet.
You’ll find the full port list for each platform in our Modern Warfare 4 Networking Failed to Start guide.
10. Look for a Security Check Failure Instead
Does the connection screen end with a message about Secure Boot, TPM, or “Failed Attestation”? Then your network is fine, and the real issue is Activision’s PC security requirement. Modern Warfare 4 needs both features enabled before it allows online play, and our TPM and Secure Boot guide walks you through turning them on.
If you still can’t connect after trying everything above, report the issue through Activision’s Modern Warfare 4 support page.
Conclusion
When Modern Warfare 4 is stuck on “Connecting to Online Services,” the first thing to check is the server status for both Activision and your platform. If they’re both online, make sure you’re signed in, let any updates finish, restart the game and router, and repair the game files on PC. If you play through the Xbox app, install Content Pack 1 and check the device limit. For stubborn cases, Activision’s router tests with UPnP, port forwarding, or DMZ usually get you connected.
