How to Place a Video Call on Echo Show?

There are two ways for someone to place a video call on Echo Show. You can either call on Alexa using the Alexa wake word and then command her to initiate the video call. Or you can touch the screen interface and place the video call on your own.

Now before we get to the process of placing the video call, there are a few things that you should know. Firstly, you and the person you are going to video call need to have the Alexa app installed on your phones. Secondly, both of you need to have the Echo Show device. Thirdly, the person that you are calling needs to be there in your list of Alexa contacts.

How to place a video call on Echo Show using voice commands?

Before we get to the process, first, you need to determine your Echo wake word. By default, it is set to Alexa, and if you haven’t changed it, you can keep using Alexa as the wake word in this process.

  • Open up the camera shutter on your Echo Show if it’s closed.
  • Say the Echo wake word(Alexa) and command “video call (contact name).”
  • Alexa might ask for confirmation from you once it finds the person from your contact list. Confirm with voice commands that it’s the right person, and Alexa will initiate the video call for you. If Alexa does not get the contact right, you can always cancel the video call on this step and tell her to place the video call to the right person again.
  • Now, wait for the person to pick up the video call on the other end, and the video call will be initiated.
  • Once you are done with the call, speak “Alexa, end the video call,” and the video call will be terminated. If Alexa is not your Echo wake word, then use your actual wake word instead of Alexa in this final command.

So this is how you can initiate and terminate a video call on Echo Show using Voice commands. Now let’s see how one can do it using the touchscreen.

How to place a video call on Echo Show using the touchscreen?

If your Alexa assistant is not taking up your commands properly or it is making video calls to the wrong person, then you should consider switching from voice commands to directly interacting with the user interface using the 8-inch touchscreen. This will prevent any accidental video calls that one might face with voice commands.

  • Open up the camera shutter on your Echo Show if it’s closed.
  • Swipe from the right side of your screen towards the center of the screen.
  • Tap on “Communicate.”
  • Tap on the name of the person that you want to video call, and then tap on the video call icon. The video call will be initiated. Once you are done with the video call, tap on the end call button on the screen, and the video call will be terminated.

So this is how you can initiate and terminate a video call on Echo Show.

Group calls on Amazon Echo:

Much like other video calling services, the Echo Show also allows for group video calls. But there is a process. You can’t just add anyone to the group video call. Firstly, one needs to create a group of people from the Alexa contacts in the Alexa. And the maximum number of members allowed for the video call is seven.

Both Echo and Echo Show owners can be a part of this video call, and if any of the participants decide to opt for video and stick with audio, they can do that too. But for a person from the group to join the video call, he/she needs to opt-in.

  • Firstly, set up the group including seven or fewer people on the Alexa app.
  • Opt for group calling.
  • Wait till all the members of the group opt to join in.
  • Then open up the camera shutter on your Echo Show if it’s not already open.
  • Say the command “Alexa, call (group name)” to initiate the group call. Among these people, whoever wants to have a video chat can choose to do so. And people who want to stick with only Audio calls can choose to stick with just Audio calls.

If Alexa is not your Echo wake word, then use your actual wake word instead of Alexa in this final command.

You can not make video calls to people who are not using the Echo device and those not on your Alexa contact list. Much like Apple’s Facetime, this is Amazon’s close interface that requires this Amazon device and Amazon app for video calling people.
