Fix: Samsung Z Fold 3/4 Cover Screen Not Working

Foldable phones have been around for quite some time now. But as far as the folding screens are concerned, the delicate beauty of the technology, be it the folding glass or the plastic screen protector on top of it, remains on the bleeding edge. However, along with a cool trick, it brings some spectacular productivity improvements and future tech that looks straight out of a sci-fi movie. But being on the bleeding edge has its caveats.

Without a doubt, Samsung is the brand to go with if you want the most effective and refined software and hardware experience with a foldable, especially for the Fold series, that doubles as a phone and a tablet. They have been pretty successful in providing a consistent experience to their consumers. But as the UI is still new and there are many moving parts to consider, there may be some issues with the software and hardware that must be dealt with.

So if you are having trouble with a black screen on your Samsung Z Fold 3/4 cover display, here are some fixes to help solve the issue.

Samsung Z Fold 3/4 Cover Screen Not Working

Why Is The Samsung Z Fold Cover Screen Not Working?

There may be multiple reasons for that; the software has been total redesigns with the Android 12L release, and Samsung is pushing new updates pretty frequently. This can be caused by a bug or just a glitch. Also, two halves are always moving, it is also possible that any impact may have dislodged something inside, hindering the display signal, or maybe it is broken and needs to be repaired, which would be quite unfortunate.

Before starting with the fixes, you need to ensure that the device is functional and that the issue is only with the display. If the foldable display is fine, then it will be obvious. But, if that is also not working, look for signs of life, like vibrations on button presses, the phone ringing, or maybe the charging sound. Once that’s done, we can get started with the fixes.

How To Fix Samsung Z Fold 3/4 Cover Screen Not Working?

Fix 1: Force Restart Your Device

The thumb rule to fix anything is a restart. Sometimes when the device is malfunctioning or not performing up to the mark, all it takes to fix is a simple restart. You can restart your Samsung Galaxy Z Fold in the following ways:

Method 1

The preferred method is to restart if your inner display is working and the device is responsive by the following steps:

  1. Press and hold the Power button and the volume down button simultaneously.
  2. You will see the power off screen pop up. Tap on “Restart.”
  3. Tap again to confirm the restart.
  4. Then wait for about 30 seconds for the device to restart.

Method 2

If your inner display is also not working or the display is unresponsive, use this method to force restart your device. Follow these steps:

  1. Press and hold the power button and the volume down button simultaneously.
  2. Keep holding the buttons for about 15 seconds until you see the Samsung Galaxy logo appear on the screen, and then release them.
  3. Wait for the device to boot up to the lock screen.

After restarting the device, check to see if your cover display works now and if the issue is resolved.

Fix 2: Boot Into Safe Mode

Booting into the safe mode makes your device go into the default settings and boot into the diagnostic state. This helps tackle any issues with glitches and bugs caused by third-party apps. To restart into boot mode, follow these steps:

  1. Press and hold the power button and the volume down button simultaneously.
  2. Wait till you see the power off screen pop up.
  3. Tap the “Power off” icon until the “Safe Mode” prompt appears on the screen.
  4. Tap on “Safe Mode” again to restart into safe mode.
  5. Wait for about 30 seconds for the device to restart with “Safe Mode” written on the bottom left corner of the screen.

See if the “Safe Mode” solves the issue and if the cover display works now.

Fix 3: Tap With Your Fingers Gently

With the moving parts of the two halves of the phone, the display connector may get dislodged with an impact or frequent movements, which is not desirable, but may happen.

This may sound gimmicky or skeptical, but many users have written online that it has helped solve their issue magically.

Follow these steps:

  1. Open your fold fully.
  2. Keep tapping on your inner screen, cover screen, and the device’s back panel.
  3. Restart the device and keep repeating this for a while.

After repeating this about five times, it can help solve the issue reported by many Fold users.

Fix 4: Factory Reset Your Device

If none of the solutions has fixed your problem, now there is a chance of some software bugs or unused files that might be causing the problem. So, a hard reset or a factory reset might fix the problem. However, it might be hard for some people to factory reset their devices.

Here’s how to factory reset the Samsung Z Fold 3/4:

  1. Once your device is turned off, hold the “Power off + Volume Up” and wait for the “Recovery mode” to appear.
  2. Now, use the volume buttons, navigate to “Wipe data/factory reset,” and press the power button.
  3. Now navigate to “Factory data reset” and press the power button again.
  4. Once the device is reset, navigate to “Reboot system now” and press the power button to restart your device.

When your device boots up again, check if the Cover Screen now works or not.

  1. My issue is that I put a good phone case on the phone and now the front screen does not come on. I take the front cover off and the screen comes back on. Any ideas??? If I put a cheap cover on it, it works, but put a good protective cover on it and the front screen will not come on. The inside comes on after you hit the on/off button, but with a cheap cover it comes on when you open the phone. Any body else run into this issue??

    1. You do remember black screen????? Just asking you can’t see any of what you are talking about so nice advice but not real world

  2. I Have Z Fold 3 & suddenly cover screen touch stopped working. I went to Samsung Authorized service centre and these people suggest me to replace cover screen. I left the phone with them for replacementof screen but after sometime these people let me know that new cover screen touch is also not working in my phone.

I think more i want to mention that it start happening after i install update.

    1. Today i reset my z fold 3 and then update software, my cover screen again start working. So I think there was software update update issue.

    2. Yeah the same thing happened to me man I did that and then my screens quit working and I haven’t been able to get them back up I’ve tried tethering I’ve tried everything
I hope everything goes better for you than me right now

  3. Same here after 14 months no issue whatsoever, loved my fold3. since the software update, inside screen doesn’t work, sound went to crap. I went to Samsung and they said it was a physical issue and needed to replace the back of the phone (which is perfectly fine). Best of all, they want to charge me $700!!! I looked online and lots of articles or YouTube video are saying there is a loose cable and i needed to tap the inside screen. Did that and the inside screen seems to have comme back.
There is clearly something wrong with the inside of folds that Samsung is NOT acknowledging.
Anyone else out there having the same issues, please post here…..!!

  4. I have been using my fold Z3 since dec 2021 with no issues, I did the latest update and my phone started failing, part by part. first the man screen went blank but I could still use the cover screen, a few days later the cameras failed, then the cover screen became unresponsive.

I emailed them, and tried all the things suggested, like soft boot, clear the cache, safe mode, but nothing seems to work.

The funny thing is that went I went back to Samsung service centre, the service rep. said ( without even analysing the phone) oh, yes you just have to change both screens and gave me the cost. The last resort was to factory reset the phone. but it too didn’t work.
This sure feels like a scam.

  5. I have no idea why method 4 works but it did for me. I hope the problem does not happen again but wanted to say thanks for the advice, I really thought I was going to need to send my phone back to Samsung yet again!!

  6. Same…. I had a software update 24 June 2023 for my Fold 3 and my outside screen stopped working. Everything works fine from the inside big screen just outer small screen not responding to touch.
