Steam Deck Keyboard Not Working, How to Fix?

Valve’s portable Steam Deck console is designed to allow players a PC gaming experience anywhere they want without carrying around all the peripherals. A trackpad is built into the device that does the work of the mouse. But what about the keyboard? At some point, a user might need the keyboard to type something; this is where the desktop mode of the Steam Deck comes into the picture.

If you enable the desktop mode on your Steam Deck, you should be able to use the on-screen keyboard on your device. But recently, some users have complained that they face troubles while trying to do so. If you are one of these troubled users, this article will help you. Here, we have discussed the probable reason why you could be having this problem and its solution. So, without any further ado, let’s get into it.

Steam Deck Keyboard Not Working, How to Fix?

How to fix the Steam Deck keyboard not working?

You cannot just tap on any entry point and expect the keyboard to appear. You need to press the Steam + X buttons for the virtual keyboard to show. Once you are done typing, you can press the Steam + X buttons again to remove the keyboard.

If pressing the Steam + X button is not getting you anywhere, the problem could be with your internet connection. That’s because the keyboard does not work in Desktop Mode if Steam is not running. Being offline will mean that the keyboard won’t work.

So even with you, the issue is probably with the connection.

Reset your WiFi:

The connection you are using to connect to the internet might need a restart. The best way to do that is to reset the connection entirely. To reset the connection, go to your router and disconnect it from the power source. Please wait a few minutes and then plug it in again.

Once it is plugged in, connect your Steam Deck to the WiFi again. If the keyboard is still not working, try the next solution.

Check your internet speed:

Most of us are on limited internet plans for connectivity. There is a chance that you might have exhausted your data and you are unaware of it. This happens quite often as users often lose track of background data usage.

So run a speed test on any connected device’s browser, and check your plan usage and validity. If everything is in place, but you still have trouble accessing the keyboard, try the next solution.

Check the Steam servers:

Steam servers do go down from time to time for regular maintenance. If you are trying to use your Steam Deck in that while, it won’t work. You will not be able to connect to Steam on your Steam Deck. The only solution here is to wait till the servers are up and running again.

If there are no problems with the server, but you can still not access your keyboard, try the next solution.

Contact your ISP:

Internet providers block out certain services, sites, or applications to monitor data use and access. For some reason, there is a chance your ISP could be the culprit behind your connectivity issue with Steam. And that is causing your keyboard to not appear on the Steam Deck device.

To fix this, contact your ISP and inform them about your issue. They should be able to help you out.

  1. Talk about being possessive! Steam literally has made everything in this device dependent on being connected to their servers!!! Not cool. We already paid for their device so it’s not fair for them to make us unable to us it if we’re offline or whatever.
