Updated on June 02, 2020: Today Verizon rolled May 2020 security patch update to Moto E5 Play Prepaid device with software version ODPS27.91-121-16-14.

Motorola has launched Moto E5 Play handset back in 2018 July with entry-level budget features and technical specifications. It has the quad-core Snapdragon 425 SoC and Android 8.0 Oreo preloaded. If you’re using this device with Verizon Prepaid variant, this article is for you. Verizon carrier has released a new software update with security patch for this device last month via OTA. The new software update brings the July 2019 Android security patch level to the phone system with the software version ODP27.91-121-14 based on Android 8.1 Oreo. Though the software update doesn’t offer any extra features to the device for now.

The Moto E5 Play comes with a 5.2-inch IPS LCD 720×1280 pixels resolution display. The device is currently running on Android 8.1 Oreo over July Security Patch. It’s powered by quad-core Snapdragon 425 SoC coupled with Adreno 308 GPU. It’s packed with 2GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage which is expandable up to 256GB via a MicroSD card.

The device sports an 8MP rear camera with an f/2.0 aperture lens with HDR, Panorama, and an LED flash. While the front features a 5MP selfie camera with an LED flash as well. In terms of the connectivity options, it has a 3.5mm audio jack, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, A-GPS, Micro USB port, USB OTG, FM Radio, etc.

The handset features a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, accelerometer, proximity, compass sensor. It packs a removable Li-Ion 2,800mAh battery which supports 10W charging.

  1. Keep your device fully charged and connected to a working Wi-Fi connection.
  2. Swipe down from the Notification bar, then tap on the Settings icon.
  3. Scroll to and tap on About phone > System updates.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to download and install the update.
  5. Tap on Restart Now option after the software installs to automatically restart your device.

  2. Scroll to and tap on About phone.

Steps to Install the Software Update Manually on Verizon Moto E5 Play Prepaid

Before installing the firmware update, make sure to follow the pre-requirements and install the necessary drivers and tools on your PC. After following the requirements properly, head over to the updating process.


  • This ROM file and guide are supported only for Motorola Moto E5 Play Verizon Wireless variant. Don’t try it on other devices.
  • You will require a PC/Laptop and a USB cable to connect your phone with the computer.
  • Download and Install the latest Motorola USB Drivers for Windows and MAC. [For All Android USB Drivers]
  • Download and extract the ADB fastboot tool on your PC (Fastboot Method)
  • Make sure to charge the device battery up to 60% at least.
  • Take a complete Backup Your Android Phone (No Root).

Instructions to Install: via ADB Sideload Method

  • Now, go to the folder where you have extracted the ADB and Fastboot Tools.
  • Download Stock ROM for Moto from the above list of Moto Stock Firmware Collections and save it in ADB folder.
  • Now, reboot Motorola smartphone to Recovery Mode.
  • Select Apply Update from ADB.
  • Plug the phone into PC using USB Cable, then open a command prompt window by pressing Shift Key + Right Mouse Click.
  • Now execute the below command in CMD screen.
adb sideload
  • Wait until the installation process completes.
  • Once the installation process completed. Reboot the phone.
  • That’s it. Done.

Manually Update Verizon Moto E5 Play Prepaid Stock Firmware via Recovery

  1. First of all, Go to Settings > About Phone > Tap on Build Number 7 Times. The Developer options will enable.
  2. Go back to the main Settings menu. Search for the Developer Options > Enable USB Debugging.
  3. Download the firmware file from above and save it in the device internal storage.
  4. Now, reboot your Motorola device to Stock Recovery Mode.
  5. Select Apply Update from SD Card.
  6. Select the Downloaded ZIP file (ROM File) from SD Card.
  7. Wait until Installation process Completes.
  8. Once the installation completed. Reboot your device.
  9. Enjoy!
