The Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime (codename on7xelte) launched in 2016 on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and ended its official updates at Android 8.1 Oreo. This guide covers installing LineageOS 23, based on Android 16, on it. Since Samsung stopped updating the phone years ago, a community ROM like this is the only way to run Android 16 on it.
LineageOS is a free, community-maintained Android distribution. To flash it you need an unlocked bootloader and TWRP recovery. If you have those in place, read our guide on how to flash a custom ROM using TWRP, then follow the steps below.
Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime overview
The Galaxy J7 Prime has a 5.5-inch Full HD (1080 x 1920) display, an octa-core Exynos 7870 processor, and 3GB of RAM, with 16/32GB of storage expandable via microSD. It has a 13MP rear camera, an 8MP front camera, and a 3,300mAh battery. It belongs to the Exynos 7870 family, which this LineageOS 23 build also covers.

Note
This is an unofficial, community-built LineageOS 23 (Android 16) ROM, not official software from Samsung. It is a beta build, so expect some bugs.
About Android 16
Android 16 is Google’s latest major release. It continues the Material 3 Expressive design with more fluid animations and theming, alongside improved notifications, privacy and security updates, and performance and battery refinements. On an Exynos 7870 phone like the J7 Prime, this comes through a community LineageOS build rather than an official update.
What works and known bugs
This is a beta LineageOS 23.2 build for Exynos 7870 devices, so some features may still be rough. Check the current list of working features and known issues on the ROM’s XDA thread before you flash, and keep a backup you can restore to.
How to install LineageOS 23 on the Galaxy J7 Prime
Go through the requirements below first.
Prerequisites
Download
Most LineageOS builds ship without Google apps, so download a matching Android 16 GApps package if you want the Play Store and Google services.
Instructions to install
- Download the ROM (and GApps, if you want it) and copy them to the phone’s internal storage.
- Boot the Galaxy J7 Prime into TWRP recovery. You can also run
adb reboot recovery from a PC with USB Debugging enabled.
- Go to Wipe, then Advanced Wipe, and select System, Data, Cache, and Dalvik. Swipe right to wipe. Do not wipe internal storage.
- Go to Install, select the LineageOS 23 ROM ZIP, and swipe right to flash it.
- To add Google apps, go to Install again, select the GApps ZIP, and swipe right to flash it.
- To root, flash the latest Magisk ZIP the same way (optional).
- Go to Reboot and select System.

The first boot can take several minutes. Once it is up, set the phone up as new.
FAQ
Will the Galaxy J7 Prime get Android 16 officially?
No. Samsung ended updates at Android 8.1 Oreo, so Android 16 is only available through community ROMs like this LineageOS 23 build.
Is this LineageOS 23 build stable?
It is a beta, so expect some bugs. Check the XDA thread for the current working and non-working list before relying on it as a daily driver.
Do I root with SuperSU or Magisk?
Magisk. SuperSU is discontinued; flash the latest Magisk ZIP in TWRP after the ROM if you want root.
