The cloud-based gaming service Steam from Valve has been around for 17 years. Some of us recently joined this platform, whereas some are as old as its beginning. This online game based platform lets up purchase and store games all in one place. You can just launch Steam and run any game that you prefer. With online, there is always the option of playing it out with your friends. When you do play with your friends or anyone online, then they will see you with an account name, this is your Steam’s profile name.
Besides the profile name, there is also the Steam Account name. The Steam account name is generated when you first open up an account on Steam. This account name is generally a combination of a few numbers. Now according to Steam’s T&C, no one can change their Account name. This is a unique number that will just stay constant. What you can change, however, is your profile name. And profile name is what anyone online would see for your account. So that is what most people would like to change from time to time, and if you are one of them, then you are on the correct page. In this article, we will show you how you can easily change your account’s profile name on Steam by just following a few steps.

How to change your username on Steam?
So the thing that you need to know is that it is simply not possible to change the Account name. It is a series of numbers that will always stay like that, as long as the account exists. Maybe in some later updates, Valve might give us the flexibility of changing even the account name. As of now, only the profile name can be changed, and that is what we will take a loo here in this post.
Change your profile username:
Your profile name is always on display for your friends and everyone else online. Even when you open the Steam Client, you will see the profile name on the top right corner of your screen. And this is where we can change the name too.
- Open up the Steam client, and if you are not logged in, then log in to your account.
- Then you will see your profile username in the top right corner in the form of a drop-down icon.
- Click on it and then from the drop-down options list, choose “View Profile.”
- Then you will see the button “Edit profile” in the next window. Click on it.
- Now simply type your new desired username in the box, which displays your current profile username. It will edit write over it.
- Then click on the option “Save Changes.”
This is the only way to change your account name. If this does not work, then you are stuck with that username for the rest of your use. This might happen if you have changed your username for several times. In such scenarios, some wonder if they can open up a new account and send everything over to this account, from that account. But it does not work like that. Steam has a strict policy for user data, and nothing from one account can be transferred over from one account to another one, even if you own both the accounts.
Now, if the account is new and you don’t mind losing all that you have purchased, all the mods that you have, all your subscriptions, then you can just start over with a new account. Everything will be like using Steam for the first time, though. But when you set a new account entirely, you can choose any username of your choice. Then log out from your previous account and log in again to this new account with the username of your choice. But you will lose every sort of data that you previously had in the earlier Steam account.
