Android 15, officially named “Vanilla Ice Cream,” marks the latest evolution of Google’s Android operating system. Building upon the strengths of its predecessors, Android 15 introduces a host of new features, interface enhancements, and system improvements aimed at delivering top-tier performance and enhanced security. With a refined, seamless user interface, this version places a significant focus on efficiency, privacy, and customization, offering users a more personalized experience.
One of the core aspects of Android 15 is its emphasis on security and privacy. New enhancements empower users with greater control over their data, reinforcing privacy as a key component of the OS. This update also aims to optimize resource usage, ensuring that both high-performance and mid-range devices can benefit from smoother performance and an intuitive user experience.
Given the vast Android user base and strong developer community worldwide, Android remains the go-to platform for device customizations. Once the Android 15 source code becomes available, custom ROM developers will be able to craft unique versions of the OS, incorporating exclusive features and optimizations tailored to user preferences. Custom ROMs allow users to replace their device’s stock firmware with modified versions from various developers, unlocking additional customization and flexibility.

For those interested in installing custom ROMs, the process requires careful steps, including unlocking the bootloader and flashing the firmware. With the right tools and guidance, users can enhance their device’s capabilities and enjoy an experience that aligns perfectly with their needs and preferences.
What is a Custom ROM?
Android Open Source Project (AOSP) by Google even allows non-Pixel Android devices to flash the latest version of Android OS, compatible with ‘Project Treble’. Here Project Treble indicates the devices that are running on Android 8.0 Oreo or higher. So, AOSP Project Treble-compatible Android device users can easily flash the GSI (Generic System Image) file to get an early taste of the new Android OS.
The best part is that even if your Android device isn’t capable of receiving the major Android update, you’ll be able to install the custom ROM on their Project Treble devices. Talking about a Custom ROM, it’s an aftermarket third-party firmware that includes customizations, visual changes, less bloatware, possibilities of rooting, installing custom modules, and more. It means you’ll get a clean vanilla user interface and a smoother performance as compared to stock Android.
Please Note: Custom ROMs are unstable enough and do have common bugs that you should consider. Sometimes security flaws or software OTA update-related issues can become quite major for daily users. So, it’s recommended to flash the custom firmware on your secondary device (if any).

Install Android 15 Custom ROM on Any Android Device
You’ll have to follow up on some requirements before heading to the flashing firmware steps.
Pre-Requisites
- To begin with, create a backup of all the data on your device.
- Next up, you will have to unlock the bootloader on your Android device. You may refer to our guide on How to Unlock Bootloader via Fastboot Method on Android. We also have OEM-specific unlocking tutorials that you could check out:
- Download and install the Android SDK Platform Tools. This will provide you with all the necessary binary files.
- Enable USB Debugging on your device. This will make your device recognizable by your PC in ADB mode. So head over to Settings > About Phone > Tap on Build Number 7 times > Go back to Settings > System > Advanced > Developer Options > Enable USB Debugging.
- Likewise, download and install your device’s USB drivers: Download Android USB Drivers for Windows and Mac.
- Your device should have the TWRP installed. This is needed to install the AOSP Android 15 Custom ROM. So, refer to our guide on How to Flash TWRP Recovery on any Android Phone and install the said custom recovery immediately.
- Furthermore, not every ROM comes preloaded with Google Apps. If your ROM belongs to that list, you will have to download the GApps package separately and transfer it to your device.
Installation Steps
- Transfer the downloaded AOSP Custom ROM to your device. Then connect it to the PC via a USB cable.
- Head to the platform-tools folder, type CMD in the address bar and hit Enter. This will launch the Command Prompt.
- Now, type in the below command to boot your device to the TWRP Recovery:
adb reboot recovery
TWRP Main Menu - When your device boots to TWRP, head over to Wipe.
- Then tap on Advanced Wipe and select Dalvik Cache, System, Vendor, and Data.
- Perform a right swipe to wipe the selected partitions.
- Once that is done, go back to the TWRP home screen and select Install. Then navigate to the AOSP Android 15 Custom ROM and select it.
- Perform a right swipe to flash this file. When that is done, again head over to Install and this time flash the GApps package (optional).
- You may now reboot your device to the Android OS. For that, go to Reboot and tap on System.
