Rust Startup Error: How to Fix Steam Load Error Even If it Open?

Rust survival game is based on a multiplayer action-adventure mode that’s developed by Facepunch Studios. Rust was released in full version for the public back in February 2018. All you need to do in this game is to survive as long as possible step by step and the game will become more intense. It’s interesting to see that a game that can be played on Steam client is literally giving the error notice “Steam Load Error – is Steam open? Please exit and try again with Steam open.” So, most of the users are getting irritated as the Steam client is already open and they’re running Rust on it as well. So, where is the issue?

According to some of the Redditors, a particular error message appears while launching the game. Even reinstalling the Rust game, reinstalling the Steam client, rebooted the system, deleting the Rust folder in the Steam files won’t come in handy.

Although there is no specific reason confirmed yet officially, luckily, we have a workaround for this error.

  • You will need to delete the “steam_api64.dll” file from the steam/steamapps/common/rust folder. For those who can’t find the location, head over to the installed Steam path on your PC.
  • Once done, restart your Steam client and run the Rust game. It should work now.
