In this tutorial, we will guide you to install Android 12 Custom ROM on Sony Xperia 5 (codenamed bahamut). The device was launched in the year 2019. The handset came with Android 9.0 Pie and was later upgraded to Android 11.0. If you are someone who wants to install the vanilla version of Android 12, then this guide is for you.

Sony Xperia 5 Specifications

The Sony Xperia 5 comes with a 6.1-inched OLED Full-HD+ display with a resolution of 1080×2520 pixels along with a 21:9 aspect ratio. It runs on Android 9.0 Pie and Snapdragon 855 SoC, coupled with Adreno 640 GPU. While the handset packs a 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage option that can be expandable up to 1TB via a MicroSD card.

In terms of the camera department, the device has a 12MP (f/1.6) wide-angle, a 12MP (f/2.4) telephoto, and a 12MP (f/2.4) ultrawide lens along with Dual Pixel PDAF, 5-axis OIS, 2x optical zoom, etc. While the front features an 8MP selfie camera with an f/2.0 lens.

In terms of the connectivity options, it has Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, dual-band Wi-Fi, USB Type-C port, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS, NFC, etc. While an accelerometer, gyro, proximity, barometer, compass, color spectrum, and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor are also available. It has a non-removable Li-Ion 3,140mAh battery with 18W fast charging support.

How to Install AOSP Android 12 on Sony Xperia 5

As the title suggests, here we’ve shared the requirements and steps to flash the AOSP Android 12 build on the Sony Xperia 5 (bahamut) variant.

Before heading over to the guide, make sure to follow all the requirements below.

Pre-Requisites

Before we begin with this procedure, I would strongly recommend you create a backup of your device storage and all your files stored on your device. Moreover, it is advised to follow the steps mentioned in this post very carefully to avoid permanent damage or to brick your device.

Charge Your Phone

It’s highly recommended to charge your handset before unlocking the bootloader to avoid your device from shutting down occasionally while going through the process. Make sure to keep at least 50% of charge or higher for a smooth operation.

Download ADB and Fastboot Binaries

You can skip this adb and fastboot part if you have already installed TWRP Recovery on your Sony Xperia 5.

Using the ADB and Fastboot command (platform-tools), you’ll be able to boot your Android device into the bootloader mode (download mode) which will be easy for you to proceed with further steps. ADB (Android Debug Bridge) creates a connection or bridge between the device and computer to sideload files.

Whereas Fastboot is a more advanced command utility tool for Android devices that works with computers. You can download ADB and Fastboot Binaries (Platform-Tools).

Download Sony USB Drivers

A USB Driver is a set of files that basically allows you to create a successful and strong connection between a mobile device with a computer properly using a USB data cable. It’ll be useful to transfer files between the connected devices, flash files on the handset, and more.

It’s also worth mentioning that not only mobile devices but also other external devices can use and run USB Drivers on a Windows computer. Such as mouse, keyboard, printer, external hard drives, speakers, USB flash drives, etc. You can grab Sony USB Drivers here.

Unlock Bootloader Your Phone:

To enjoy any custom ROM, you must first unlock the bootloader on your Sony Xperia 5.

Install TWRP Recovery:

It’s worth mentioning that most of the third-party AOSP (Android Open Source Project) ROMs (also known as aftermarket firmware) come without any preinstalled Google apps package. You can manually install the Android 12 GApps by following our guide.

Instructions to Install via ADB:

  1. First Install the Google USB Drivers on your computer.
  2. Now, download the Lineage recovery from here
  3. Turn off your device
  4. Now boot your device into fastboot by holding the Power and volume up key.
  5. Type the following command to flash the recovery
    fastboot flash boot boot.img
    
    fastboot flash dtbo dtbo.img
    
    fastboot --disable-verity --disable-verification flash vbmeta vbmeta.img
  6. Now hold the power key and volume down key, you will boot into recovery.
  7. Sideload the ROM package.
  8. Now flash the PixelOS and make sure to Wipe data if you are installing this ROM for the first time.

Instructions to Install via TWRP: (Not Tested)

  1. Connect your device to the PC via USB cable. Make sure USB Debugging is enabled.
  2. Then head over to the platform-tools folder, type in CMD in the address bar, and hit Enter. This will launch the Command Prompt.
    cmd platform-tools
  3. Execute the below command in the CMD window or enter recovery mode by using the Volume and Power button combination. your device to TWRP Recovery:
    adb reboot recovery
  4. Now head over to the Install section and navigate to the downloaded vendor and firmware. Perform a right swipe to flash it.twrp-custom-romTWRP Home
  5. If you want Google Apps as well, then you need to flash it at this instance itself. Go to Install, select the GApps ZIP file, and perform a right swipe to flash this file.
  6. When that is done, you may reboot your device. Head over to Reboot and select System.

Your device will now boot to the newly installed OS. With this, we conclude the guide on how to install the AOSP Android 12 on Sony Xperia 5. Do keep in mind that the first boot might take up some time and you might have to set up your device from scratch.

Conclusion

Flashing the ported Android 12 on your Sony Xperia 5 will give an early taste of the latest Android OS version.
